2 Movies & A Blizzard

Hello dear friends.  Thank you to all who took the time to drop me a note concerning our "weather event."  In the great words of Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive."

The Mister took Friday off and we decided to go out to lunch and hit a movie.  For some reason, it was the Mister's turn to pick again.  How does this keep happening?

We were amongst the millions of people headed to a movie theater this weekend.  We were perhaps the only people who were not buying a ticket to Shades of Grey.  Oh, it's not that I'm a prude or anything.  I figure why watch Shades of Grey on a movie screen when the Mister and I actually live it every day.

First of all, before I tell you how I really feel about this flick, The Kingsman received mixed reviews.  A lot of the critics loved it. I was not one of those people.  It was a very long movie.  The fight scenes were extremely graphic.   If I wanted graphic, I would have gone next door  and watched Shades of Grey

The Kingsman teetered on a thin line between a farce and a downright ridiculous attempt at humor.  Even the great talent of Michael Caine, Colin Firth, and Samuel L Jackson couldn't save this despicable movie.

The Mister didn't care for The Kingsman either.  And yet, I overheard two older women (much older - probably in their 50's) in the ladies room chatting it up about how much they enjoyed it.

So what do I know?

On Sunday, snowbound day, I had a mission in mind.  I was going to pick a chick flick to watch On Demand if it was the last thing I was going to do.  I couldn't believe that The Rewrite was one of the options, considering it was just released in the theaters.  Jackpot!

The Rewrite is exactly what you would expect - predictable and charming.  Hugh Grant plays his usual self-depreciating character that he plays in all of his movies.  Marisa Tormei  is believable as his love interest.  The years have been kind to both of them.

The Rewrite won't win any Oscars, but it was a great escape movie for a snowy day.

Were you one of the millions to see Shades of Grey?
Would love to hear your review!

  1. No desire to see the Grey flick, but I'm with you for pulling up good, sweet stories at home on-demand. We've been busy with Mardi Gras parades and parties, but it's supposed to rain on our parade tonight. (I know, you have no tolerance for a mere thundershower!).
Snow and ice as far south as Georgia tonight, so whatever you have is spreading!

  2. I won't see 50 Shades either. I read the book, but hated it so much. I watched my favorite other Grey's - Grey's Anatomy and am on caught up thanks to on demand :-)

  3. Definitely not seeing 50 Shades. Could not even make through the entire first book it was SO poorly written. Refuse to put any more money in that woman's pocketbook. We are awaiting our winter blizzard. LOL

  4. I am with you no way am I seeing 50 shades, didn't want to read the book and certainly not see the movie! But to each his own and i am probably in the minority:) Funny, I had no desire to see Kingsman either so thanks for saving me a movie ticket! We saw The Imitation Game and it was FABULOUS! I really will be rooting for it (and The Theory of Everything) at The Academy Awards...now these are "real" movies. Never heard of Rewrite but sounds/looks cute! I will check it out.
I was thinking of you and the terrible weather..how much snow can there be up there!! We are due to get more tomorrow and I pray its not headed your way. Stay warm and cozy.....

  5. I am happy to hear that you survived the weather events. Don't laugh too hard but in my neck of the woods we are "bracing for a winter storm, of...3-9 inches." It will probably shut down the city.

I never read shades of grey and will not be seeing the movie did want to see the Kingsman so thanks for the honest review.

    Have a great day!

  6. ooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkk........here comes the skank who DID see 50 Shades and read all of the books. Sorry, but my shallow lil mind loved it!! Was so glad they didn't pick "popular" actors for the movie for that would have ruined the story. I thought the cast was brilliant and I thought they "gracefully" turned the book into a good movie. And I will say that I didn't see one person get up and leave! I am definitely not into the S&M thing and the movie didn't make it about that. I thought it was very well thought out as far as taking mental images from a book and putting it out in the open.
And guess what?? It really IS a love story. I saw it with girlfriends and it made great fodder for conversation over drinks after the movie. But the best conversation followed with my hubs of 37 ys!!! when I got home. heh!!!!!
I will look forward to the next movie made from 2nd book.
There ..... I said it, I'm a baaaad lil southern gal and lovin every minute of it!!

  7. No shades of gray here! Didnt read the book and frankly I saw 9 1/2 weeks 20 plus years ago to me this is just an updated version of that movie , so why mess with the original! SO disappointed to hear that The Kingsman was so bad. I love Colin!

  8. I love your movie reviews - especially from the movies that Mister selects. My Mister and I also have different tastes in movies. But, we both have decided our next movie will be Imitation Game. I will let you know if it was a thumbs up from both of us. Stay safe and warm.

  9. So glad you went to see Kingsman first...Hubster and I were going to go, but then declined due to the thongs...I mean throngs of people trying to park at the movie theater to see Shades...we drove right home. I am also glad you were able to make your way through the snow mounds that I know is life for you right now. Take care.

  10. Non, chère Katie, I don't want to see "50 shades" and I haven't read it either. I am so prudish! I don't even know how many French people have seen it but the critics were very bad. I hope you keep your spirits up in spite of the snow.

  11. We are going to be completely caught up on all of our binge tv watching and on demand movie watching since this winter seems to have no intention of abating. Pass the popcorn...and the wine!

  12. I'm glad to hear your review of The Kingsman. We saw previews and I thought it looked like too much farce, much as it pains me to say anything negative about a film with Colin Firth. Not seeing Shades of Gray. Not getting the hype. I have daughters and don't particularly like the message. I feel like you almost can't say that without being called a prude, which I'm not, but I wish it had remained a book. So different reading something as opposed to the visual.

  13. Thank goodness for your review of The Kingsman. I would have hated it. NO INTEREST in 50 Shades. I have been watching the Breaking Bad spinoff on AMC. It was a nice way to spend a snow day! Plus that and reading a good book. We finally have some of the snow that you have been having for so long.

  14. Dear Katie, after the 10. sentence I was unable to continue reading - bursting out laughing!
You always be a great entertainer... !

  15. A friend asked if I'd see 50 this weekend, since she knew I was the only other one from book club that read or enjoyed the book. Followed by drinks after, is the plan. Loved your other readers review...married 37 years, nice!!

  16. We also went and saw Kingsmen and felt the same way though we know our boys would have loved it. Spoiler alert: We have to admit that the heads exploding to fireworks music was pretty well done... With the hubbies traveling at the end of the week, we may have to check out the Rewrite. Here's counting the days until spring... Hang in there, dear Katie!

  17. Hello Katie, hopefully you are faring better with the weather now!

I am reporting from across the frozen pond....I was swept up in the crowd with a bunch of friends who booked tonight to see 'that' movie.. I have not read any of the books, so I only had a vague idea what it was all about.
Well, the sets are certainly beautiful, and the acting was good.....but the story is extremely dark and sad and I was crying. As a mother I would not want a daughter to see it.

However, there were some hints of Melanie....and even of beautiful Tippi Hedren. Wasn't she wonderful in Marnie? so..that's my two pence, for what its worth

Honestly, I have a much lighter take on life ......Give me Bridget Jones and Sex and the City any day!! :)
The next movie I see will be funny.... the Exotic Marigold Hotel

Love to you across the miles my dear, have a lovely evening xxx

    1. Thank you sweet Sally from across the frozen pond! I love your review! Glad to see the sets are beautiful and the acting was good! It's amazing how much she looks like Melanie! I have seen her interviewed all week. And Tippi Hedren... such a great actress and lover of animals. I will definitely sneak a peak at this movie when it comes on Demand... but not when the Mister is around. I don't need to give him any crazy ideas! So great to hear from you sweet Sally. Enjoy your week!!

  19. Hello, and thanks for visiting my Hodgepodge today! Nice to meet you. I have no desire to see Shades of Grey and I didn't read any of the books, either. I'm not a prude, but years ago read 9 1/2 Weeks and figured this one would be more of the same. I didn't enjoy 9 1/2, so am sure I would not enjoy Shades. However, I wrote down Rewrite and will have to look it up. Love Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei. Thanks for the Kingsman review. Will skip it, for sure.
