Happy B-day #1!

To My Firstborn...

I've always loved you best
because your were our first miracle.
You were the genesis of a marriage...
The fulfillment of young love...
The promise of our infinity.

You sustained us through the
hamburger years...
The first apartment furnished in
Early Poverty...
Our first mode of transportation...
The seven-inch TV set we paid for for thirty-six months.

You were new, had unused grandparents, and had more clothes than a Barbie doll.

You were the "original model" for unsure parents trying to get the bugs out.

You got the strained lamb, open pins, and three-hour naps.

You were the Beginning.

Happy 21st birthday, #1!!
You make my heart burst with love and pride.  There's no one in the world that makes me laugh more than you do.
I wish you nothing but buckets of happiness and love in the years ahead as a "legal" adult.
And no matter what...
remember
 your Mama loves you...

 As my #1 would say...
 Happy thirsty Thursday!

Note: For anyone who is concerned that I am playing favoritism with this poem (that's you,#2), I will be posting the second half of the poem, "To the Baby... I've always loved you Best" in September.

  1. As a #1, I obviously love this. Hope she has a great birthday! I am at work 8-5 in the Medical District with a really flexible lunch hour, so anytime you're in Dallas we can get together! Glad you had a great holiday!

  2. Awwwhhh what a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to your beautiful daughter. Happy 21st bday to her. My son is also 21 and its bittersweet to see them turn into full fledged adults and leave behind those "childhood years" that I have such fond memories of yet like you I am so proud of who he has become. May she have a year filled with with happiness, love and much success!

    Hugs,
    Laura
