First Hodgepodge of 2018

Hello, dear friends.  Al Roker tells me Massachusetts isn't the only state suffering from this Arctic chill.  Normally, I would complain about this for a full paragraph, but not now.  One of my New Year's Resolutions is to stop complaining.  I've only broken it 364 times since New Year's Day.  A world record.

If it's Wednesday, it's time for Hodgepodge.

1. It's that time of year again...time for Lake Superior University to present a list of words (or phrases) they'd like to see banished (for over-use, misuse, or general uselessness) in 2018. You can read more about the decision making process and word meaning here, but this year's top vote-getters are-

unpack, dish (as in dish out the latest rumor), pre-owned, onboarding/offboarding, nothingburger, let that sink in, let me ask you this, impactful, Cofefe, drill down, fake news, hot water heater (hot water doesn't need to be heated), and gig economy

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word not on the list you'd like to add?

One question... isn't "dish" from the 1950's?

The only word out of that group that I hear ad nauseum is fake news.  I'm pretty sure that that phrase will disappear when the present administration moves on.

A couple of weeks ago, I was at the hairdresser and sat next to a lady who would not shut up.  Not that I'm complaining or anything.  Her voice made my teeth itch.  She kept using the word conversating.   If she said conversating once, she said it 30 times.
Is there such a word?

If I never hear that word again, I will die a happy woman.
This no complaining thing is really working for me.

2. What's something you need to get rid of in the new year?

Not this kind, either.

3. Where do you feel stuck?

I feel stuck the minute I begin to start taking my New Year's resolutions seriously.

4. January is National Soup Month. When did you last have a bowl of soup? Was it made from scratch or from a can? Your favorite canned soup? Your favorite soup to make from scratch on a cold winter's day?

Thanks for reminding me, Joyce.  The Mister made the most delicious tomato soup this weekend and I forgot there is still some left in the fridge.  And yes, he did make it from scratch.  Now I know what I'm having for lunch.

5. Tell us one thing you're looking forward to in 2018.

Summer.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

My Mister ordered the standing desk for his office as soon as it came on the market.  He would then come home from work and tell me how many hours that he stood, according to his nifty Apple watch.  I told him how many hours I sat according to my big, fat rear end.

Anyway, according to this article, there is good news for people like me who are sick and tired of all the new health fads.

Now I'm just waiting for the article that tells us that we need to drink 8 glasses of wine instead of water.

*****

Happy Birthday to my #1 who gives a whole new meaning to the phrase joie de vivre.

Until next time...

  1. Katie,
You've got me chuckling today. The pictures all fit your words perfectly. I think most feel stuck once they actually try to implement all these good thoughts.

  2. Wish I were more of a soup person but I’m really only a bisque person. If there’s no cream or wine I’m not showing up.

  3. Oh- yes--I hate that word conversating, too. Seriously? I am also tired of hearing "at the end of the day"...How about "in the morning when I wake up" instead?

Hope you have a great day- enjoy your soup and whatever you are reading today! xo Diana

ps- Glad you figured out which blog I am using! lol

  4. National Soup Month? We've been partying hearty on that and I had no idea. Rick's split pea and ham (Day 8 of ham for me; he's still working on it -- I rebelled and switched to my fabulous, super-easy Julia's French onion for a couple of days.) It's difficult to be around either of us a few hours after dinner.

You opened me up for two of my big pet peeve words. The first is "amazing!" EVERYTHING is amazing, which makes the things that really ARE amazing, less so by comparison. I was watching some TV show over the holidays and the host said it 14 times in less than an hour. And trust me, what was "amazing" wasn't all that amazing.

The other one is using "Gift" (a noun) as a verb. I'm sorry, but I don't gift you a toy, I give you a toy. I wasn't gifted one, I was given one. And I'm not into gifting. I'm into giving. How did this happen and why? I really need to look this up.

Well, it's a feisty day today. Maybe I should put on eight layers of clothes and go to the movies!

  5. Happy Birthday to your beautiful daughter. One phrase I am tired of is Dilly Dilly. I am not sure where it originated but it can go back home. There is a rumor it will be in the 40s here on Sunday...getting out my flip flops and capris!! I am so tired of the bone chilling cold...us southerners are not made for this!!

  6. Hahahahaha! I'm dying over your random thoughts but because I'm in the same boat. Not the standing boat but the sitting one. And the big fat rear end one. Wait, is that 2 boats or one because they're related??? Ha! My #1 has a birthday tomorrow and I have one on Saturday but we will not be discussing the latter. Have a wonderful day!

  7. That soup sounds delicious, and so does that sandwich. Your little Diva Chili needs the tree. Shouldn't you keep it up year round just for her?? 🙂 This is the first year in many that I actually made resolutions. I have a long list, but so far have managed to keep only two. This isn't easy! Have a great year ahead. I think you should invite all the Hodgepodgers to your house for lunch!! Have a great 2018. xo

  8. Conversating...? Oh, that's annoying! It's freezing here in NJ and I am hoping this latest storm stays out to sea...although they keep saying it's heading inland which means more snow for us! My kids are thrilled because after being back to school for 2 days, they definitely need a snow day...ugh. I'll never get this Christmas mess cleaned up! Enjoy your day and stay warm!

  11. Happy New Year! And happy birthday to your beautiful daughter. Unpack is one I'd be happy to never hear again. I'm more into looking for good omens than making resolutions since my resolutions have a half life of 2 seconds. Hope the storm misses you!

  14. Oh my, love when people make up words or phrases and use them ad nauseum. Soup sounds good right about now. Happy birthday to your #1. It is our #1s birthday today as well.

  16. Happy New Year! And no conversating is not a word! It is conversing. I make sure that my hair chair time is a time when no one else is in there! Isn't that terrible? No! All the good food in this post...all the good food. It's freezing down south too sweetness - we haven't got past 32 for days and most days we haven't made it to 30. Hello summer? xoxoxo

  17. Oh, that soup looks delish - and as for winter, you have another coastal storm heading your way so batten down the hatches!!

  18. Happy New Year! Resolution #5 - read and comment on favorite blogs in a timely manner! So far so good. I can do without most of those words/phrases, but let’s keep nothingburger. Reminds me of the indomitable Helen Gurley Brown and a twist on her mouseburger term. Cheers!

  21. Conversating...what in the world?! I'd say the most overused words are awesome and amazing, which I say way too much. And adulting and gift as a verb are pretty irritating. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

  22. Your tomato soup looks yummy! Happy birthday to your #1! My #1 is celebrating her 3rd wedding anniversary today. I sat in front of a woman who talked without pausing for a single second on our 6 hour flight out west in October. I turned around and gave her the stink eye through the crack in the seats but she didn't get the message. There was a gentlemen seated beside her (trapped) and she just kept up a running commentary the entire flight. It was far more annonying than the crying baby in front of us. At least his parents were apologetic. Now off to do some sitting : )

  23. Is conversating even really a word? It just doesn't seem like it!

My fat bottom is the perfect way to measure several things that are too off balance here lately. Time to get up, do some impactful work, and download some booty!

    Happy New Year!!

  24. HUGE. Maybe that is another word that will go away when the present administration is no longer in the White House.

  27. I wish I had thought to say "summer" for what I'm looking forward to this year. Right now welcoming June with open arms is at the top of my list!

  28. Katie,

Mmm, that soup does look good! I do way too much sitting, too. I've fallen off track where exercise and diet goes, but I'm going to get back into the groove of doing things right. I just wish I wouldn't fall off the wagon so-to-speak every holiday season. I would make that a resolution but I know I won't keep it. *sigh* I'm ready for summer, too. It's been so darn cold in the Tennessee Valley. I really shouldn't complain because I know folks up north such as you have it tons worse. I do remind myself of this every day. I am thankful to live here instead of Brunswick Maine like DD#2. Their weather is just too crazy cold and snowy for me. I loved reading all of your funny responses and am looking forward to a full year of smiles and laughs when I visit you. Many blessings to you throughout 2018, dearie!

  29. Love soup, and that tomato looks fab. I'll have homemade ham & bean soon, and a lemon chicken noodle I previously froze just for this month. I know how you can spend this week's blizzard....on your heated bathroom floor! Isn't it the BEST??! Happy birthday to your #1 - may her future remain bright.

  30. Happy birthday to your #1. She is so cute!
I wish people would stop using "perfect" for just about everything. Save the word "perfect" for, well, something that is Perfect. Makes me crazy!

  31. I am worried about all my New England friends, this winter is too brutal! I think the phrase I would add to the banned list is global warming...the main water line to our island on the Gulf coast froze this week when temps dropped into the twentys and we had a day without water in this subtropical zone! Yes bring on Summer!
