A Book & A Movie

Good Morning, dear friends, from Snowbound Central.  The news anchors are equating the flakes with confetti in celebration of the Pats win.  The meteorologists are giving their usual flake-by-flake forecast.

The Mister and I went to the movies, did a little shopping, and a bit of lunching this weekend.

I picked this movie.  This did not get good reviews but I don't really listen to them, anyway.

The Mister and I truly enjoyed this film.  Although it is predictable, it's got a good story line.  Some reviewers say that the young girl stole the movie.  I disagree.  I felt  Octavia Spencer was incredible in her role as the grandmother.  Kevin Costner was also believable in his role as a grieving, functioning alcoholic.  He's not so bad to look at, either.

It may not be worth the price of a movie ticket, but I highly recommend renting it.

Eighty-five-year-old Addie tells the story of her life to her twenty-two-year-old granddaughter, who has asked her "How did you get to be the woman you are today." She begins in 1915, the year she found her voice and made friends who would help shape the course of her life. From the one-room tenement apartment she shared with her parents and two sisters, to the library group for girls she joins at a neighborhood settlement house, to her first, disastrous love affair, Addie recalls her adventures with compassion for the naive girl she was and a wicked sense of humor.

I don't know whether I mentioned this before, but I have been invited to a book club.  I am so excited!

This is the book that was chosen.  I enjoyed this coming-of-age novel  tremendously.  It is beautifully written.  The story moves along quickly and I truly enjoyed being in Addie's company, and learning about her compelling life story.

That's all I've got for now.  Unless of course, you are interested in a snow total update.

Any book recommendations for me?

  1. Almost done with The Girl on the Train. Good, but really depressing. I need a really good book since we're snowed it too!

  3. I just read "The Girl on the Train" by Paula Hawkins. I highly recommend it for unputdownability. (My new word..like it?). I wouldn't rate it as high as "The Good Girl" simply because the ending was more predictable, but I enjoyed it, found it difficult to put down, and bet it will be a movie one day.

  6. I might have to check out your movie recommendation...did you know Ms. Spencer went to school here in my hometown (Montgomery, AL)? we are so proud of her and I loved her in The Help...plus Kevin Costner is my favorite actor!

Hope your weather improves soon...it's cold and rainy here this morning.

  7. Thank you for the movie and book reviews. I need some recommendations as well for upcoming beach trip. You may like The Accidental Empress. My sister got an advanced copy and loved it. Evidently, Kathie Lee Gifford did as well as it was her favorite thing this morning on the Today show.

Stay warm...only 6 more weeks of winter!

  8. I didn't even realize Octavia Spencer was in this movie! She's one of our favorite Alabama girls. Our favorite Alabama guy of the moment is Malcolm Butler who snagged that ball in the end zone last night in the Super Bowl. So exiting!

  9. Flake-by-flake forecasts... ain't that the truth. And then all the out-in-the-field reporters scattered in various towns reporting the vital information that IT'S STILL SNOWING - in case we have access to a TV but not to a window.

I hope that you have hired a new snow-plower.

  12. My neighborhood has a book club and I was thrilled to be invited to join when I showed up at the HOA Christmas party two years ago, and these ladies have become some good friends. Even traveled for a girls weekend to Atlanta to see a funny play called "The Book Club.' Hope you enjoy your group as much. Favorite books recently...The Light Between Oceans (my house this month)...Defending Jacob (dark but interesting)...Where'd Ya Go Bernadette...Unbroken...Me Before You. Seems its about 50/50 the books I like and wouldn't have picked. Final point, I enjoy making my book club laugh and I know you are going to do the same.

    1. Caroll... So glad that you found such a fun book club. You read some great books too. The great thing about book clubs is that I read books that I wouldn't have picked. I probably wouldn't have read The Boston Girl but glad I did. Have a great week!

  13. Good morning, my dear...how are you holding up in the tundra? I can always count on your book recommendations - I have discovered quite a few from you, so I will definitely read "The Boston Girl". We had hoped to see "Black and White" over the weekend but didn't make it...it sounds like it isn't worth braving the elements. I saw an interview with Kevin Costner and it looked good. Stay warm!! xoxo

  14. I just finished All The Light We Cannon See and loved it. I am also in an English history phase and am listening to George, Wilhelm and Nicholas right now. The Boston Girl sounds like one I will love so it is in my queue now. Snow days should make good reading days. Enjoy your book group!

  15. I was very curious about Black & White. Glad to know that it is a "rent it" rather than a must go see. We are buried under an unbelievable pile of snow here, too. I'm glad your snow plow crew finally came to do their job. And great news about the book club! Enjoy!

  16. Just read The Light Between Oceans for book club last month, it was good. We're reading Luncheon of the Boating Party this month, it's an older book, but we've enjoyed other books by the same author.
I can't believe all the snow y'all are getting!
