A Patriotic Hodgepodge

Happy Veterans Day, dear friends.  It is a wet one here in Massachusetts, but as my dear departed mother used to say... we need the rain.

Is it Wednesday already?  Life seems to whip by as one grows older.  Not that I would know...  It's time for my favorite series, Hodgepodge.

1. In two or three sentences tell us what Veterans Day means to you.

Veterans Day is the day that we take the time to thank and acknowledge the brave men and women for their military service.  We would not have our freedom if it weren't for them.

2.  What's your favorite film with a patriotic theme woven into the storyline?

It is one of my favorite movies of all time - Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

3.  Flu shot - yes or no?  If you answered no, do you plan to get a flu shot?  Have you ever had the flu?

I have been a great advocate of the almighty flu shot since I got the wicked bug about 30 some odd years ago.  I don't think I have ever been sicker in my whole life!

Which reminds me... #1 & #2 - have you gotten your flu shot yet?

4.  I've seen lots of people posting pictures of their Christmas trees up and decorated.  Many stores have had Christmas on display since well before Halloween.  Red cups are back at Starbucks, sans the holiday decor, and that has some people up arms.  What are your thoughts on all the holiday ruckus this second week of November?

These issues do not get my big girl panties in a bundle.  If the holiday decor or the red cups bother you - don't go into the store or truck on over to Dunkin' Donuts for your coffee.  No need to share your beliefs or the specifics on Facebook.

5. What 'critter' are you most afraid of encountering unexpectedly?  Why that one?

I would have to say a mouse unless he wore a cute little sweater and his name was Stuart Little.

6.  Do you like building things?  What's the last thing you built?

Probably the last thing I built was a gingerbread house, and it looked very much like this one.  Construction is not my strong suit.

7.  In keeping with this month's theme of gratitude... what are you most grateful for that brings beauty to your daily life?

I had the hardest time thinking about how to answer this one.  So I went on my walk, and it hit me.  Our 'hood is a small area of historic homes.  I love the charm of the area, and I get to stroll in it every day thanks to my annoying Fitbit.  I took some photos for you.

I have an affinity for yellow houses.

Gorgeous setting for a beautiful home.

This stunning home just screams preppy New England to me.  That's probably why I love it so much.

I have had the pleasure of being in this one and it as charming on the inside as it is on the outside.

So Joyce, thanks for that question and making me aware of the beauty of my surroundings.  Shame on me for taking it for granted.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

This video came across Facebook today.  It was put together by midshipmen on a zero dollar budget to pay tribute to Annapolis.  I hope it was as much fun to make as it is to watch.

Until next time...

  1. Love, love, love that video. I had not seen it before!
All that hoopla over Starbucks drives me crazy. My dd managed a Starbucks for years. Their cups did NOT say Merry Christmas to begin with---they had snowmen on them...or snowflakes....or Christmas trees....lol And they ALWAYS said Merry Christmas at the drive-through window.
    LOVE your 'hood! xo Diana

  2. I love the video. We lived in Annapolis for nine years, and I am betting they had a lot of fun making it. I always wonder if people who put their tree up on Nov 1st run out of steam by Christmas. I'd be so ready to take it down, long before the 25th. Stores are in it to make money so I think we have to live with that. Lowes had trees up in September which shocked me a little. I guess people like to buy early?

  3. I like your extra photos! I don't do gingerbread houses either...or mice, but I agree that a cute little sweater might make a difference.

  5. Wonderful service dogs, I'm glad you mentioned them too. As for Stuart Little, I don't think I'd even like him if he were scratching inside one of our walls! Ewww.

  6. Katie what a wonderful video. I think of our service men and women all the time because my DIL's Father is a Vet with many health issues from war. I just got my flu shot this week which was late for me! Love Stuart Little, when is the next movie coming out!!

  7. The commercial before the video was actual good too! (Thing plug - or whatever it's called to plug in your phone)
I agree about the red cups. If people are so desperate for inspiration, they may want to look to this thing called . . The Bible. Duh.
    Happy Veteran's Day to you!

  11. First of all...YES to flu shot. My son got the flu last year even with it but it was very mild. The flu is the worst!
As for Christmas cups, I am Jewish. I love Christmas Decorations, Christmas Trees and Christmas Carols. The cup thing is totally absurd. I wonder if Starbucks started the controversy themselves to drum up business. All the Starbucks posts on Social media is making me crave Starbucks and I don't really go there!

As for the weather, enjoy it. It is still so very hot here in Miami...like gross sweaty hot. I really crave a sweater day.

  12. I LOVE the video by the Middies. My college roommate is the director of laundry operations for the Naval Academy. It's great to see the work of her great team on display in this musical number!
Now, about those Starbucks cups... To me red + green = Christmas. I don't get how this is a "war on Christmas". What am I missing?!

  13. Well done!!! Cheers to the veterans...who give us the freedoms we all take for granted. They deserve the utmost respect and to me a hefty bonus courtesy of our government:)
I am SICK of this craziness about Christmas..its a beautiful holiday and its one that transcends religions. My Jewish and Moslem friends alike LOVE it and enjoy coming over to ooh and ahh over my tree and often offer to help me decorate it. It is a wonderful holiday and the spirit should be celebrated by all......great video too!
And last year was the first year I got the flu shot but not the last, will be getting it done this week, thanks for the reminder:) I just love "your hood"......

  14. Since I happen to live in the great state of Maryland, I have seen the Mids and their Naptown Funk...fabulous! Definitely worth sharing...a side note Annapolis is a very preppy town. I am so grateful that we are the land of the brave in order to be free...great Hodgepodge.

  15. I got my flu shot too. Love to read friends answers as you get to know people better. Hello friend. Well my dad was in WW2 and my husband in the Viet Nam war - so they believed enough to fight for our freedom - to make sure we have the freedoms promised to us in the US Constitution which Andy is studying now in his US Government Class. So Veterans day means a lot to us too.

  16. Love the video and your neighborhood -- such lovely homes! Not bothered by holiday decor this early and I think the red cups are so cute! Always get a flu shot! Great hodgepodge as usual!

  17. Some beautiful houses there and loved your response to #4. Don't go to Starbucks but was walking past one recently and noticed we have the plain red cups here in the UK too. Hadn't heard what a fuss they're creating!
