Great Books, Grilled Cheese, & A Good Buddy

Hello, dear friends.  Last week, I spent a lovely day with my buddy, Annie.  We attended a "Meet the Authors" breakfast in the picture-perfect waterside town of Cohasset.

It was held at the Lightkeeper's Residence, which opened to the most gorgeous view.  I don't think I will ever tire of living near the water.

This is Kathy who is the owner of Buttonwood Books and Toys in Cohasset, which sponsored the event.  If you ever find yourself on the South Shore, please stop by this darling store.  Kathy has a stellar staff and a great selection of books.  My favorite part of Buttonwood Books is the table showcasing staff picks.  Each chosen book has an attached note that details why it was selected.

The authors that we met that day were all interesting speakers.  I must apologize to them about their photos.  I don't know what happened.  I think I've got to go back to photo school.

Louise Miller is presently working as the pastry chef at the Union Club in Boston.  She candidly shared how this book came into existence.  It all began when her beloved dog contracted terminal cancer and she decided to quit her second job and spend his last days with him.  The poor dog was not expected to live long, but with Louise's kindness and TLC, he survived for another year and a half.  During her walks and time spent with him, the book came to life in her mind.  After her beloved pooch passed away, she decided to sit down and write this book, which is a combination of mouth-watering food descriptions and a splash of romance.  Sounds like the perfect combo to me.

I've got two Foodies in my life and they are both getting a copy for Christmas.

synopsis

I was enthralled with Katherine right from the start.  Her entire book club came to give her support.  I love that.
Katherine spoke about her early career as an entrepreneur and creating a successful company.  She then tried her hand at writing.  Fill the Sky centers around three lifelong friends who take a trip to Ecuador and are searching for answers to life's problems.

The book sounds like a beautiful testament to friendship.

I thought Ann Hood was captivating.  She told us a funny story about when she was a child and writing her first stories about her grumpy grandmother. Ann also shared a heartbreaking time in her life when she lost her five-year-old daughter to an infection.  She has since adopted a beautiful daughter who accompanied her to the reading.

I love the premise of this book.  The main character is a middle-aged divorced woman with grown children.  She finds herself in a rut and joins a book club.  Each member's assignment is to find the book that has meant the most to them.  Friendships are developed, tears are shed, love is found, and more books are discovered.

This sounds like the perfect book club read.
I bet I'm not the first one to come up with that idea.

Annie & the Authors

It was a delightful morning and I look forward to reading all three of the books.

The next stop was lunch so we headed for downtown.  The movies Witches of Eastwick and Housesitter were filmed in Cohasset.  You can see why - it looks like a movie set.

Can you tell that Annie is a dog lover?

I guess Annie likes to match her outfit to her restaurant of choice.
South 5 Main is one of my favorite sandwich places on the South Shore.

Although South 5 Main has an abundance of yummy dishes, my heart and hips belong to the grilled cheese, tomato, and bacon on whole wheat.  I order it every time and even admit to having dreamt about it once or twice.

After building our strength, we hopped in the car and were off to indulge in some serious cardio shopping.

There was a great sale going on at my favorite outlet on cashmere sweaters that day.

No shopping day is complete without hitting the nearest Marshalls.

Books, authors, grilled cheese, bargains, and a good buddy -
now that's what I call a fun day!

Have a great weekend!

  1. What a wonderful event! All the books seem compelling & have piqued my interest. The town looks lovely; I watch many movies just for the real estate & Housesitter & The Witches of Eastwick are among my best-loved ;). {As well as It's Complicated.) My favorite thing to do is go for a drive to quaint little towns & explore (DH & DD tolerate my roadtrips). Lovely post... thanks for sharing! PS Tell Sista her kitchen renovation is perfection! She was able to modernize it yet keep the historical integrity of the home...she rocks! Have a fabulous weekend my friend...xoxo, Dawn

  6. The City Baker's Guide is a sweet book. There's no other way to describe it. I loved reading about the events at the B and B. There is not a lot of riveting action, but sometimes one just needs a sweet story. Don't miss this one.

  17. I miss living near the ocean....there is just something about it that brings back so many wonderful memories and relaxes me enough to take any troubles away!! Haven't been to Cohasset in years - but it certainly looks like is has preserved itself! Blogger took away my "blog list" and it took me many days to remember everyone's blog names and recreate it - still not completed, but at least now and I can just "click", rather than "think"!!
