The Best-Laid Plans...

Hello, dear friends.  Did you have a good week?  Unfortunately, mine did not go as planned.  As a warning, this post could be considered a whinefest but as Nora Ephron said everything is copy.

I am sitting here looking out the window at another gray, wet day.  The weather peeps are overly excited because our rain total has not been this high since the late 1800s.  Who can get that exhilarated about rain?  Yes, our landscaping is a vibrant green, and my hydrangea bushes are beginning to fill out.  But the gray skies are so darn depressing.

My mood may have something to do with the fact that I should be looking out on a variation of this scene.  But things didn't work out that way.

Yes, he even sleeps in his bowtie.

As Maria von Trapp would sing let's start from the very beginning. Wednesday evening, the Mister instructed Alexa to wake us at 2:00AM.  The ever-dependable Alexa awoke us with soft chimes.  Before the Mister got up, he checked his phone.  Oh #$@&**!  Our flight has been canceled!  I'm going down to call them now.

McLeod & More

The Mister's blood pressure was at an all-time high as he sat in his office and waited to speak to an airline agent.  Twenty minutes later the agent informed him that all flights to Dallas were canceled due to weather.  He begged asked her to book us on any other flights going anywhere that would get us to Puerto Vallarta by Friday.  She informed him that everything was booked and there were no seats available until Saturday evening.  The Mister told the agent to refund our money.

The next two hours were spent with a frustrated Mister tapping away on his computer searching every airline site known to man.  At about 4AM, he threw in the towel and told me that there was no way that we could get there by Friday.  Everything was booked solid.  The earliest would be Saturday evening which wouldn't work out because we would only be there for a day before heading home early Monday morning.

You're probably thinking... big deal, you missed your weekend getaway.  It wasn't just that... we were meeting the royal couple along with Adorable Jonathon's parents at the hotel where the wedding will be taking place.  We were scheduled to meet the wedding planner as well as participate in a food tasting. We had yet to see the wedding venue and #1 wanted her Dad's opinion of the food options.

As we attempted to go back to sleep, we were heartsick for our #1 girl.  We were all looking forward to this weekend for months.  We knew our girl was going to be devastated and we were not looking forward to making that phone call spilling the bad news.

We called #1 in the morning before she left for work. She put on a brave face but later called us in tears. There is nothing worse than breaking your kid's heart.  I know that it's not our fault, but it still hurts.

So I sit here, with a practically perfect faux tan (spotty around the ankles and wrists) and a neatly-packed (for me) suitcase that is not going to unpack itself as the Mister says.

Fortunately, my girl has Adorable Jonathon, who can turn the world on with his smile, and his darling parents that my girl adores. I'm confident that once she steps off the plane, and the excitement sets in, life will be wonderful again.

The good news is that the royal couple will be here for a quick visit in a couple of weeks and we are flying to Dallas to throw them a shower in June.

Thanks for being my sounding board. This is a disappointment, but it's not the end of the world.  I'm going to stop indulging in self-pity and pull up my big girl panties, dab on some lipstick, and count my multitude of blessings.

And then I may call in some moral support.

My girl posted this pic on Instagram last night.
I think she's going to be just fine.
The jury is still out on moi, though.

Until next time...

I know 2 pups that were pretty happy how everything turned out.

  10. I am so sorry to read this. I am sure that it was a huge disappointment for #1. Traveling these days is a pain in the butt. I am sure the shower in June will be fabulous!

  11. We have all those disappointments...Now, I haven't had one that let the kiddo down, so I know you are beyond sad. My daughter and I had a spring New York City trip planned a spring or so ago and snow cancelled all flights to NY, so we were bummed.
Our wedding story was one that involved a rare ice storm in the south. 5 years ago a few days before the wedding, ICE shut down Atlanta where the groom's parents lived (they spent that night in a Publix grocery store) and Birmingham where bridesmaids lived. Lindsay just grew completely quiet!!! Fortunately the ice melted the day before and the weather was perfect along the Gulf Coast, but for about 48 hours we were trying to stay calm!
I hope all goes well for the next trip.

  12. Oh my, what a horrid let-down for you all. Katie, you daughter is just beautiful. I think you are right that she is okay and it will all work out. I can only imagine how upset you were to get that flight cancellation news.

  13. So sorry to hear that you and The Mister could not be there with #1 and AJ and his parents.
Disappointing I know but the wedding is going to be beautiful.

  14. First of all, daughter #1 is just stunning. I'm so sorry the weekend didn't work out. It seems like the airlines are disappointing more and more people lately. I've heard lots of stories, including yours. Hopefully, you'll get some sunshine this week. :)

  15. Yes...the best laid plans...I know a little bit about that subject, myself. How disappointing for what was to have been such an exciting weekend for your family and I'm so sorry it didn't come together. But you have a great attitude...I mean what else can you do, right? Your #1 and her Adorable Jonathan are just the cutest couple and you have so much to look forward to! May this week be filled with sunshine and many blessings! Hugs!

  16. So this is what happens when I check out of blogland (not by choice)!! CONGRATULATIONS! How incredibly exciting, I am so happy for them as they are the cutest couple on the planet:) Ugh....I so share your travel frustrations, been there many times. I can imagine how upset you both were, travel is NOT what it used to be, so sorry you could not make it, but i know you will make it up to them in spades:) Cannot wait to hear about the details as they unfold. Hope the sun is shining over there, I am so done with the dreary cold, gray, rainy days...ENOUGH!
    Hope you are well:)

  17. Oh this must have been a real sinking feeling Katie. It reminded me of planning our daughter's wedding. They lived in Memphis and the wedding was going to be here in Fort Worth. Nothing was turning out....nothing...so we changed her plans and all flew to Puerto Rico for their wedding at the ST.Regis...couldn't have been better! In the end, it will all be a beautiful time for you all...I just know it!

  18. Ahhh.. now I can see the comment bar! Went through Bloglovin don’t know why that makes a diff! So sorry such an awful thing happened to you all. That must have been a HUGE disappointment. Our daughter was living in Tucson when we planned her wedding which was to be held in SC where we live. There were plenty of snafu’s believe me. There will be more fun coming, and you all will wind up happy and exhausted in the end. If it helps any I am about as sick and tired of rain as I’ve ever been in my life! Hope you have no other problems along the way to you precious girl’s big day!

  19. Katie, I am so sorry this happened and I know that you were beyond being disapointed and sad. I would have been too! But, look at this way if you can....There is a reason or everything and maybe sweet lady, that reason was that BETTER is coming and in a way that you least expect it. I am whining with you but thankful that you weren't allowed to fly in bad weather. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  20. So sad for you! It's all so special as MOB and MOG and you want to be there! Just keep thinking about the upcoming visit and all the photos and videos they will be able to share with you in person (perhaps over a glass of wine) We did a lot of that!

  21. How frustrating! I'm so sorry. I'm sure it will be fine, but such a disappointment. The weather has been weird here too. Southern California is boring with sun and even temps. We have barely reached an 80 degree day this year and there's been rain when there usually is sun. :-(

  24. How disappointing for you and your family. Some days it seems as if the clouds will never part.....

  25. That is horrible! I would have been screaming and stomping and doing some major whining. Sounds like your darling daughter has a great supporting cast. These things do pass but dang it is disappointing I know!

  26. Oh this makes me sick, I am so so sorry! I can't imagine how disappointed you must be! I know you have your hands full with the wedding, but I was so sad to hear you are retiring from the TTTs! We will miss you!

  28. Oh no, I know this was a heart breaker! Nothing like not being able to carry through with plans we make with our kiddos. I know she was fine after the disappointing call. You will have so much to do for the shower this will all fade away. Hope your rainy days have turned to sunny ones. Have a wonderful week...........

  29. Un f-ing believable. Pardon my french. I’m sorry this happened. Someone must be held accountable. The weather service, the airline, the mayor of Dallas? I can’t imagine your shock, horror and disappointment. Once again, your sense of humor rises to the occasion. xo

  30. You need a big sounding board for this one. I can imagine you were both pretty darned devastated about the plane situation and not being able to be with #1, Adorable Jonathan and the Senior Jonathans. I know all will be well in the end but it doesn't mean it wasn't a heartbreaking weekend for everyone. Big hugs to you -- and here's to Dallas.
