Books, TV, & Movies

Hello, dear friends.  Did you enjoy your Mother's Day weekend?   We are having another rainy, cold day here.  I have a busy week ahead and I am hoping that we see some sunshine soon. If not, I'm going to have to invest in one of those sun lamps!

As I listened to this book, I randomly found myself smiling.   One critic described this book as fun and that's exactly what it is.  This novel centers around a self-doubting writer whose book is chosen by an infamous editor.  The audio narration is well done.

The audio version is narrated by the author.  I enjoyed Ruth Reichl's story of rising from food critic to Editor-In-Chief of Gourmet magazine.

I read the first book in this series and I thought it was pretty good.  It is about a woman who unbeknownst to her was married to a serial killer.  Spoiler alert:  this book opens with the husband of the year escaping from prison.

I was so excited about the release of this book.  I have read every one of Jo Jo Moyes' books and can honestly tell you that I enjoyed them all.  I was deeply disappointed in this book. The story was disjointed and the characters less than interesting.  I finally put it down and gave up on it.

If you enjoyed Big Little Lies you are going to love this one. This novel is about a woman who is disgraced while working in a high-profile job at the White House. She moves with her family to her husband's small home town.  And by the way... her in-laws live across the street.

Gosh, did I ever enjoy this book!  It is written by Kristy who is at the helm of the fabulous blog, Design Chic. The Southern Side of Paradise is the third and last book of a series.  The story revolves around a widow and her three adult daughters who moved back to their beach house in a small town full of quirky characters.

Again, Kristy did not let me down.  She does such a wonderful job capturing all four personalities.  I was especially drawn to Ansley, the mother, and enjoyed her love story.

If you haven't read any of Kristy's books, I highly recommend that you begin with Slightly South of Simple.  You are going to want to pack the other two books in the series in your beach bag.

I enjoyed every minute of getting to know the Milton family through the generations in this exquisitely written book.  This novel has it all - money, race, rivalry, entitlement, and lost love.  As a side note, the audio version is pitch perfect.

The author wrote The Last Mrs. Parrish, which I enjoyed very much.  A wealthy woman who appears to have everything investigates her mother's murder.   Need I say that the clues can be found in Baltimore's high society?  I've just started listening to this one.

I sent The Gown to KTG for her birthday.  I just started reading it and it's hard to put down.  This historical fiction centers around the women who embroidered Queen Elizabeth's wedding gown.  It's the story of strong female friendships, resilience, and redemption.

Cute gift for the new grandmother.

I have a feeling this book is about me.
Sorry, Sista.
I enjoyed Best Day Ever so I may give this one a whirl.

Great reviews on this complex family drama.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Jamie at an author's luncheon.  I am a big fan of her writing and have already downloaded this book.  It is the story of a single mother who learns that a famous artist left his beautiful waterfront home to her fourteen-year-old daughter.  The artist's business partner is not happy.

I can't wait to sink my teeth into this suspenseful novel which takes place in the Hamptons.

The Farm is a luxurious spa that houses women who are paid to carry babies for other people.  The guests cannot leave the property until the child is delivered.

Amazon

John Glynn writes this coming of age memoir about his summer at The Hive, which was a shared house in The Hamptons.  He was 27 years old at the time and was recovering from a deep loss and struggled with loneliness.

Amazon

This one is described as a chilling novel about female friendships and burning ambitions.

This is a rom-com about a young woman who fiddles around with her horoscope in her quest to lock down the man of her dreams.

A girl who has been raised in the wilds is adopted by a family whose business is training search and rescue dogs.

This is the story of a quirky family who joins together to make the pilgrimage to their eccentric grandfather's funeral.

This is another historical fiction story that takes place at the Ritz.  The woman who is the Mistress of the Ritz secretly works for the French resistance during World War II.

A collection of renderings depicting America's favorite NYC Restaurants.

If you can't live in Nantucket, maybe you can close your eyes and eat like you are there.

One of the Mister's favorite chefs.
I ordered a copy for him for Father's Day.

Trailer

The Mister and I binge watched this show about a news show in the 1950s and enjoyed it.

Trailer

We are now watching this fictional account of Catherine of Aragon's life.  This is based on one of Phillipa Gregory's books.

Trailer

I'm watching this series on my own.  The Mister took a pass.  It is so well done and Michelle Williams steals the show.

Trailer

It's about time.
Can't wait to watch the first show.
And no, I won't miss Thomas.
I think his scary girlfriend is in it, though.

Trailer

I'll probably catch this one while folding laundry.

This one looks interesting.

Do you have any suggestions for me?

Until next time...

  1. I always look forward to your book reviews. I got a little behind with my reading these last couple of weeks but I plan to start Kristy's book soon! What is with this weather? I know your weather is similar to ours in NJ and I have never seen so much rain! It's pouring right now and will be most of the day...and it's so chilly! This morning, my son showed me the webcam from Killington, VT where they got a couple inches of snow overnight...just crazy! Enjoy your week!

  2. I love Quindlen and Reichl and The Editor and The Mistress of the Ritz look right up my alley. The Guest Book, too. Ugh, Don't you wish spring would just come to stay? But it does make for good reading and viewing time. Are you watching Fosse/Verdon?

  3. Joe didn't like the Fosse series either. We watched the first 2 or 3, I think. You read some great books, Katie!

  11. I want to read the Killman Creek series because it sounds right up my alley. It's been on my TBR forever (well, it seems like it) but I just keep passing it by. I have to stop doing that! The Farm sounds interesting too.

  13. Katie, this post is filled to the brim with excellent entertainment. I loved the Editor! Thanks for the tip about JoJo Moyers, I have that on my side table now. Have you read the The Red Address Book or My Mrs. Brown? Both are excellent.

Currently reading, The Woman in the Photograph, The Story of Alice, and The Food Explorer.

    Have a great day!

  14. I discovered that the JoJo Moyes book was not a new book, but one of her first that was newly released in the USA. I didn't really like it either (very unlikeable main character) and was surprised I didn't because I have read all her older, less popular books and found them good.

  15. I'm looking forward to watching Southern Charm tonight too. I always thought T-Rav was too old to be on the show anyway. Enjoy the sunshine coming this way.
