If You Could Redo One Thing in your Kitchen...

I want to begin this post by thanking everyone who took the time to help me through my our marble vs. granite decision in the kitchen.  The Mister and I have made the decision and I would say 98 percent of it was based on your generous and insightful comments.  I am not ready to tell you our choice.  I want you to live in suspense and lose many hours of sleep and lots of weight worrying about whether we made the right decision. For those of you who are new to my blog, that was my faint attempt at sarcasm.

So now I have a question for y'all.  If you were to change one thing in your kitchen, what would it be?  I invite you to share with me any decorating or architectural decision that you or the previous owners have made that you would like to change.

For instance...

Perhaps you may have used too much wallpaper.

Or maybe the color of the cabinets did not quite meet your expectations.

Or the floor was not your dream of walking barefoot on.

Or you felt you would rather cut through the counter tops rather than on them.

Or maybe the overall design is too complicated...

Or your appliances are more fad than functional.

Whatever it is - I want to hear about it.
Next week I'll be asking you about the BEST feature of your kitchen.

Hope your weekend is full of great taste!

  2. OMG!!! Those photos are priceless. Hmmm...one thing only? The top two involve cabinets, so you're gonna get both. Cabinets would go all the way to the ceiling, no dust collecting useless space inbetween. And, the corner of our L shaped counter-the cabinets above are angled and house a lazy susan-easy to get to things, the bottom below squared off-cannot even begin to get to the back corner, such a waste of space!

  3. Cabinets. They are maple, not that they aren't pretty, I just don't like maple.

  4. LOVE the photos! You must have had a field day googling "ugly kitchens"! The one thing I would change about my kitchen is my ugly 1980's cabinets. My kitchen functions perfectly so my husband sees no earthly reason to change anything - I won't be doing a reno any time in the near future.

Have a lovely weekend, my dear! xoxo

  5. We have cherry cabinets......I don't like them. I want them to be antique white. I am too afraid of painting them and having painters remorse. I would also go back and choose for them to go all the way up to the ceiling. We are pinching pennies around here to hopefully completely redo the kitchen next year and just replace everything.

That yellow kitchen reminds me of my grandmother's kitchen. I thought it was so pretty when I was little!

  6. I loved my last kitchen except it was too small. We moved last month and are building a house, when it's done it will be my dream kitchen - cant wait!

  7. Love your sarcasm! OMG those kitchens are beyond ugly!
Ok, built 8 years ago and love everything BUT the side-by-side. I know you didn't ask about appliances but that would be it other than the stainless steel aspect! Totally DETEST stainless! I'm saying silent prayers on a daily basis that it breaks.

  9. I moved into a lovely kitchen that is spacious and well laid out. But the brown cabinets and black countertops, while nice, would not have been my first choice. Prefer a light and bright white kitchen. Hope to catch a few winks tonight when not wondering about your counter choice...

  10. Hi Katie, With our home renovation project in the works, I can relate to those sleepless nights, weight loss/gain;);) etc.. with all these decisions. The kitchen is SO important to get right. I was asking readers about pantries in my last blog post because so many homes (even new ones!) have these cabinet pantries that are deep and very inconvenient. Clearly the design is the result of a guy .. a woman would never do that. I've always liked my kitchen with the exception of the dumb pantry set up. In our new place I will have a an open pantry with shallow shelving for easy access.

    Have fun this weekend! xxL

  11. We "spruced" up our kitchen with new granite countertops, farm sink, shutters, and all new appliance...We love everything but wished we could have redone the cabinets (the biggest expense). I'm sure whatever you end up doing it will be great.

  12. Good evening Katie! I LOVE this post! Of all the rooms in my dream house where I live, it is the kitchen that I need to finish up. What would I change? Just the paint color. It is currently a light ochre color, in keeping with my French Provençal theme. However, I would now change the color to white with gray woodwork, and the rest is gorgeous. Sometimes just a paint job, or a granite top vs. marble is all we need to make our dreams come true!

Good wishes on finishing up the rest, and thank you so much for coming by and commenting! Enjoy this crazy love forever......Anita

  13. Hi Katie, my kitchen had been updated prior to our move in, but there are a few things that bother me. The least significant is that there are specs of blue in my granite countertops and my decor doesn't have any blue in it. When I first moved in, I thought I'd need to embrace the blue but I've since chosen to ignore it and use my favorite corals/yellows and greens so I barely notice it. (that's not entirely true but at least I can live with it) The biggest thing that I wish for is a large, walk in pantry. Who does't want more storage?! I can't wait to see what you end up with!

  14. The builder decided not to put in wood floors as he had planned in the spec house we bought. He stained the concrete and reduced the price. We discussed that we planned to add wood floors, but he didn't tell us he hadn't left enough space in the kitchen below the counters to accommodate the sub-floor and wood. We had to put travertine in the kitchen while we put wood floors in the rest of the house. I really pine for wood floors throughout the house, but lifting the counters would've been too many $$.

  15. The one thing that bothers me the most in my kitchen is the COOK. She is so outdated an needs a total redo. First some Botox around the eyes would give a much brighter appearance. Then around the mouth some restylane will give that dated look some pizazz. Now the major work in on the neck that is a total lift. After that is all finished that COOK will be a reason I will love being in my kitchen. The photos were one of your best.....xoxo R

  16. Oh gracious--those kitchens are priceless! I recognize some of those linoleum floors. We renovated our kitchen about 6 years ago and I absolutely love everything about it--from the custom cabinets to the integrated appliances to the black granite countertops and limestone countertop on the island. There is not a thing I would change, except... it would be wonderful to have a huge walk-in pantry closet! We took part of the back entrance coat closet and converted it to a pantry, along with a wonderful tall pantry cabinet that has pull-out shelves and lots of space. But I find that I would like more space to house cookbooks (out of sight, 'cause I really don't want to go through all of them to find a recipe anymore!), and small appliances that are used infrequently but that I still like (like my Panini press and ice cream maker!). Hmm, a grilled cheese sandwich and some chocolate ice cream may be on the menu! Maybe I should just get rid of all of those cookbooks.... Great post. Can't wait to hear what your plans are for your kitchen in snowy Massachusetts!

  17. The one thing I would change is that I would get a bigger refrigerator. Not necessarily a Sub-Zero but something larger than what we have and preferably a freezer on the bottom. What we have is OK for the two of us but woefully inadequate when entertaining. The things I love about my kitchen are the abundance of drawers rather than cabinets and my pull out spice rack. Can't wait to see your finished product!

  18. We just redid our kitchen, and I love everything about it! But, it was a circa 1984 kitchen in a 1946 house, so it had to be gutted. My oven was a Frigidaire Flair, if that tells you anything. So, it was not even updated in 1984 from previous owner. I will definitely share when you ask about favorite!
