Dabbling With Downton

Hello, dear friends.  I hope you are had a wonderful weekend.  The weather here in the Northeast was nothing less than spectacular.

Over the weekend, the Mister and I headed to the Cape to visit with my old Texas tennis buddy, Jill, and her hubby, Rich.  They just built a beautiful house in Yarmouth, which is only steps away from the beach.  We enjoyed a delicious linner (a combined lunch and dinner) and then spent some relaxing time at the beach.  It was a perfect day with great friends.

Today, the Mister and I went out to for a delightful lunch and then hit the movies.  Want to guess what we saw?  Yup, Downton Abbey and it was fantabulous! I can't say enough great things about it.  If you haven't seen it yet, I will pass on one small tidbit... Maggie Smith stole the show.

Speaking of Downton, the Mister and I attended the Downton Abbey exhibit in Boston over the Summer.  I was relieved that they allowed photos so that I could share the experience with you.  There is one caveat though - because we attended it in June, I don't remember a lot.  It's the price of getting old. That'll teach me to write posts right away.

The Mister and I were there on the day that the exhibit opened.  What can I say... we are compulsive overachievers. It was very organized, and we had a minimal wait.

They had tons of cute things for sale along the line.

The thing I loved about the exhibit is that you could get up close and personal with many of the costumes.

It included every detail.

They didn't miss a thing!

Back off, Mrs. Hughes.
He's taken!!!

Look who popped in!
Chef Mister and his beautiful, young sous chef!

I'm trying to talk the Mister into putting one these in our kitchen.
Next step: hire staff.

Somebody stole my hide my double chin pose!

I remember how I shed happy tears during the wedding episode.

And then when Matthew died...
I needed an oxygen tank to regain my composure!

Who do I need to talk to about finagling a dinner invite?

Just because you didn't make it to the DA exhibit does not mean that you miss out on all of the fun.

You can always channel your Lady Mary for Halloween.

And why not include your hubby?

Even the kids can get into the act!
As long as they don't steal your thunder.

I ordered a couple of these for hostess gifts.

I ordered this little book for a friend who is a colossal DA fan.

  6. I saw the exhibit when it was in Delaware. Very interesting, with lots of information about how they sourced the fabric, made the costumes, etc.

  9. I just love everything about DA! I will have to look for the exhibit to come into my area. I know it will be at the Biltmore in NC for the holidays. I had the pleasure of visiting both Highclere Castle and the house used for Lady Grantham (Maggie Smith's) set while I was in England. And yes, Maggie Smith really did steal the show with all those zinger lines. And handsome Tom too.

  10. I wish this had come closer to my area -- your photos are great. I remember some of those specific gowns and I love the kitchen. Have you seen the film yet? It's good. I'm not sure people who didn't see the series would get it like the rest of us and the plot is a tad weak but really, who cares? It's Downton -- all "our people" looking fabulous and oh -- the shots of the house! It really is quite glorious!

  11. We recently saw the DA exhibition and it did not disappoint. Fascinating. The docent informed us the every night that have to count the buttons on the clothes, check all the hairpins, etc. to make sure nothing was missing.

  13. That exhibit looks amazing! I haven't seen the movie yet, but I want to. I had no idea there was a Downton Abby Clue. That's pretty cool.

  19. Hi Katie, I saw the exhibit in Boston about a month ago and was surprised how emotional it was for me. Seeing the kitchen was so incredible, the dining room...well let's just say I had to show great restraint not allowing myself to jump the ropes and sit right down. Seeing the clothing up close was the icing on the cake and evoked so many memories of scenes and situations. Last my husband and good friends of ours had 'dinner and a movie'. We were NOT disappointed. There was a bit more humor interjected which was fun and all in all a delightful evening. By the way, I have the call bells in my current home and for some reason they never seem to ever call forward any staff...sigh.

  20. It will be coming to the Biltmore house in Asheville from November 8 thru April something. Every year Biltmore is decorated for Christmas on November 1 so not only will we see the house with the exhibit, we will see it with Christmas decorations!! So excited looks like it will be great! We saw the movie last night and I think they set the ending up perfectly for a sequel! I mean why not? How many Star Wars did they do? Here’s hoping!,
