April Books,TV, & Movies

Hello, dear friends.  Happy Friday!  I hope that you all had a wonderful week.  The Mister and I have a weekend filled with errands and catch-up chores for Spring.

Here are some books that have caught my eye this month.

If I were a betting woman, I would wager that The Beautiful Strangers will be on my Top 10 Best Reads list for 2019.  The characters captured my heart.  It didn't hurt that the setting was at the Hotel del Coronado, either.

Btw... this is a Kindle Unlimited book which I think is the best deal in town.  For less than ten buckaroos a month you have access to thousands of Kindle as well as Audible books.

I listened to this one thanks to Kindle Daily Deals.  It started off strong but seemed to drag towards the end.

This suspense novel moved quickly and served many twists and turns.  The characters were well-rounded as well as believable.

I'm midway through this one.
The jury is still out.

Robert Dugoni wrote my favorite book of 2019, The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell.  I'm presently listening to this legal thriller, of which he has written many in this genre.  It moves quickly and has kept my interest so far.

This is my free book choice from Amazon First Reads.  Haven't started it yet.

This book with the stunning cover is described as The Devil Wears Prada meets Mad Men.  It takes place in 1965 and captures all the glamour of NYC.

This sounds like my kind of read.

This novel takes place in 1957.  It centers around a couple of honeymooners who get carried away by an eccentric, glamorous crowd.
I love the author's name, btw.

This book is written by the author of the best selling hit, The Lilac Girls. If you read it, Caroline's mother and her lifelong friendship with a Russian woman during the WWI era is the subject of this one.
I smell another hit...

I only hope that the story is appealing as the cover.
This book is fiction but features a real person who was an editor.
There is a big hint as to the mystery person sitting on the desk.

A woman struggles with her mother's legendary notoriety.
I'm downloading it on Audible when it is released on Tuesday.  Jojo Moyes is one of my favorite authors.

A pain in the neck mother-in-law dies and leaves a suicide note saying she had advanced cancer.  The coroner disagrees with the diagnosis and finds poison in her system.
DIL:  take my advice.
Run for the hills!!

I still haven't gotten to Next Year In Havana which was a big hit last year.  I do have it downloaded though and look forward to reading it.  This one will be released on Tuesday.

This is one of the Mister's favorite authors.

This one sounds like my life story.
Don't tell Sista I said that.
Btw: I have enjoyed all of Burke's books, and this one looks especially enticing.

Wait... whaaaat?
The author of Shades of Grey wrote a book about the Mister?

I wonder if I'm mentioned.
Seems to me, I spent my share of time keeping the principal company.

This book has to be good.
I loved the Cathy comic strip.

She looks like she only eats once a week.

This looks like pure, raw, unadulterated eye candy between two covers.

Next month, my buddy Kristy's fabulous book is being released.  I have an advanced copy which I am saving for a very long flight that I have in my future.

Let me begin by saying that I loved this show.  But it is definitely not for everybody.  If you enjoy Ricky Gervais' humor, you will feel the same way I did about the show.  However, if you don't appreciate Ricky, this show will not make you like him.

The Mister liked this one.
I was just so-so.

Trailer

This is another one that the Mister appreciated.
I say - don't quit your day job, Doc Martin.

We are watching this on Amazon Prime.
I am loving every blessed minute of this fabulous series.

My favorite guilty pleasure is coming back on April 7th.

Trailer

There's only one movie that I am interested in seeing.

Do you have any recommendations for me?

Until next time...

  1. So many great suggestions! I'm with Mister though regarding David Baldacci. The best! I will have to look for "Redemption" audible for our June trip to Indiana. I thought of you with the sunglasses on the desk.

  2. No book recommendations sadly....this is a dry year for me. However, Marvin and I are enjoying the new Masterpiece Theater series, Mrs Wilson. I am eagerly awaiting the return of Endeavor in June but for now I am happy that Call the Midwife is back!

  3. I chose that same book for my Amazon First Reads. Fingers crossed it's a good one! I've been doing a lot of heavy reading this year and this one felt like it would be a good break.

Two historical fiction books that I really enjoyed reading in March were Winter Sisters by Robin Oliveira (author of My Name is Mary Sutter) and Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff. I always enjoy your book recommendations.

  5. Joe and I both enjoyed Manhunt, but Martin will always be the Doc. It was hard seeing him in that role. I always enjoy your picks and reviews!

  9. TV: I'm still trying to sit myself down more often and finish watching the thoroughly enjoyable box set of Downton Abby (years after the series ended). I should do it before the movie comes out in Sept!
    Enjoy the warm weekend!

  11. Embarrassing confession . . . I don’t know how to do Kindle audibles . . . that will be my project for the week. The Beautiful Strangers is being downloaded (the old fashions visual way) as I type (tap?). The Hotel del Coronado is a family favorite vacation spot since my dad was stationed there when I was a kid. I’m simultaneously screeching into the On Demand remote to find the Forsyte Saga ... anything British and/or featuring Damian Lewis is a must see. How you keep up with all these new releases while maintaining your Super Model Trophy Wife AND MOB existence is beyond me. You’re my idol. xo

  12. The Beautiful Strangers looks like a good summer read.

Cape May was NOT what I was expecting but will also be a good summer read (I read an ARC).

I am going to check out the Alafair Burke book!

  16. I requested the Editor from NetGalley and was rejected and it's made me bitter towards that book. It's not the book's fault but still.

  17. I go to Cape May every summer so that makes me want to read that book!

  19. Hi, Katie. Just had to stop & take a minute to tell you how MUCH I enjoy reading your blog posts. Whenever I get the email notification, I stop to read yours first. :)) Your posts can always make me smile, even after a frustrating day. We have a lot of the same tastes... my kitchen has always been decorated in cobalt blue & white. I love to wear pearls & pretty sweaters. I have a cute dog, Taffy, who I adore & knows several tricks and still acts like a puppy even at 10 years old! I read your post about no more disco dancing on the wood floors, and she seemed to listen. Let's hope so. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Would love to meet you if you're ever in Charlotte, NC.
