Pies, Politics, & Penmanship

Hello, dear friends.  I hope that you are having a good week.  Ours has been bitterly cold, but warmer temps are expected today.  We got some snow over the weekend but not enough for a whine-fest.
The Mister took a 4-day weekend. We stayed in, baked some one-point mini muffins and whipped up a pot of 0-point chili which was delish.  I plan on doing a post in the future about my WW journey and progress.

Prepare to be bored to tears.

If it's Wednesday, it's time for Wednesday Medley.  Terri writes the soul-searching questions, and brave bloggers answer them.

National Pie Day is celebrated annually on January 23rd.  (Not to be confused with March 14 which is π Day).

1.  Okay, 'fess up.  Tell us your top three favorite pies, please.  Will you have some pie today?

If I could find a low-point pie, I would.
Sadly, I don't think that I will be successful.

Taste of Home

When I was growing up, there was a lady that would come to our door and sell fresh raspberries.  My parents always bought some, and my Mom would bake a pie.   This is the only thing I remember her ever baking in her whole life.

My Mom hit it out of the ballpark with her raspberry pie.  She served it piping hot with a big ol' scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.  The first bite practically brought tears to my eyes.

Here's the Recipe for the above-pictured pie.

I'm a sucker for a pecan pie, and if you throw a little bourbon in the batter, I start to drool.  The Recipe can be found here.

Betty Crocker

Last but certainly not least, the above photo is of a piece of German chocolate pie.  I've never had it before, but I have a feeling that I would love it.  The Recipe can be found here.

Note to self:  when I get too skinny from WW - learn how to bake.

2.  While we are talking about food... are you a picky eater or are you ready to try any new food?  What is the worst thing that you have ever eaten?

I am not a picky eater.
Especially not these days.

The worst thing I have ever eaten was made by my Mister.
It was blood sausage.

I still have nightmares about that bite.
Note to self: cut back on the dramatics.

3.  Baking could be considered an art as could cooking.
How do you define art?

4.  Tell us a really stupid joke that made you laugh, please.

I would, but all of the jokes I have heard lately are political.

5.  January 23rd is also National Handwriting Day.  Do you have nice handwriting?  Did cursive writing come naturally or did you practice in those double-lined practice books until your fingers hurt?

I do have nice handwriting, and I can thank the nuns for that.
I was a scholar in both Spelling and Penmanship.  As a matter of fact, they were the only subjects in which I excelled.

Pardon the bragging.

6.  Tell us something random about your week.

I'm listening/reading two very good books.

Great thriller!

Beautifully written and lovely story.

What's the worst thing that you ever tasted?

Until next time...

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Feel free to contact me through comments and email. I love to hear from my readers!

  1. Are the mini-muffins still 1 point if you eat 10 of them? Ha, ha! Pecan pie is Michael's favorite, so I try to make it during the holidays. Hope you have a wonderful Wednesday!

  2. Well the note to self about learning to bake when you get too skinny had me laughing and coughing (getting over a month long head cold) and it's only 5:40 am!!! I can't fathom even trying any food that starts with 'blood.' Vampire food. Have a great week Katie!

  3. Liver is the worst thing I have ever tasted. It was like eating chalk.
I too have good penmanship. I loved all the bragging on me when I was little so I worked even harder at it. It was way better than math which is surprisingly one of my favorite things now. Only took some decades for that to happen.
I love to bake and chocolate meringue is one of my favorites. Alas---lots of calories though.

  4. Adding blood sausage to my list of food I will not eat.

  5. Blood sausage? YUCK! Just the name of it makes me cringe! Your mama's pie sounds amazing! Fruit or berry pies are the best...with Breyer's, of course! ;)

  6. Liver is the worst, and lima beans are a close second....my gag reflex kicks in just writing that down! Stay warm!!

  7. I join you in the blood sausage situation. I had black pudding once in Oxford. Once, you'll note. And I didn't finish that either. I don't get it -- regular sausage is so darned good! Ah, well...

  8. My husband had tried blood sausage and said it was horrible so I didn't want any part of trying it after that. I cannot stand the taste of goat cheese. The smell alone makes me sick.
I do love chocolate cake or pie and that one looks so yummy!!

  9. I am not wild about lima beans or eggplant ...I do like all kinds of pies. Pecan, cherry, and key lime.

Random thing about my week: Got tired of grabbing navy blue pants thinking they were black. Bought an under the counter (in this case shelf)led light strip (battery operated) that I installed my self!

  10. I've never had blood sausage. Had I tried it, I'm sure it would have been on my list of things to never eat again! That raspberry pie looks SO good. Thanks for joining in today. It is fun reading everyone's answers and then the comments. Liver & onions have been mentioned several times... I happen to like them!

  11. Oh, you're killing me with these pie photos! :))) My father loved blood sausage ... tongue, too. It's all I can do not to gag at the memory. That Taylor Adams thriller looks intriguing!

  12. I'm a cake girl more than pie. Actually, I'm a potato chip girl more than anything. Your photos are killing me.

  13. look a lot of delicious food.
    have a great day

  14. Oh, my, blood sausage! Yuck and double yuck!!! That German Chocolate pie would likely thrill my Hubby to death. But, since he needs to be on WW, I'll not make it. :o))

  15. Pecan pie is another favorite of mine! YUMMY!!! I enjoyed your answers! Happy Wednesday!

  16. Oh Katie!! You made my eyes and my mouth water with your pie picture and story! Such beautiful memories or a simpler time! Hugs

  17. Katie---I need to know more about these one point muffins...stat! I am also doing WW but really love my muffins. Bonus if I can make them gluten free.

  18. Yay ready to place the order for No Exit! I love pie, key lime is my fav, then pecan, then old fashioned cream and now I want pie, haven’t had much sugar since Christmas and I want it, lol. Mmm worst thing I ever tasted...a Chianti wine in Florence....ugh! Spit it out all over the crostini lol

  19. Oh, yuck! I think I will have nightmares just from the look of the blood sausage. It must be similar to blood pudding. My friend's brother and I were sent to buy that for their grandmother when we were younger. We looked in every store in town and couldn't find it...for a very good reason...we were looking in the pudding section. We finally asked and found out it was something in the deli. LOL

  20. Delicious pies! The chef loves apple, my favorite is lemon merignue. Neither are on WW.

  21. Okay , I'll bite on the joke. What do you call a cow that just gave birth? Decaffeinated.
    u r doubled over laughing , i know.
making the german choc pie, i would fight a marine for that!

  22. I can't stand liver, blood anything, and sushi. I cringe just thinking of those things. I love custard, raspberry, peach or anything chocolate for my pie choices. Enjoy reading your blog every day. Thanks!

  23. I grew up in England - Blood sausage was on the menu everywhere and sold out at the Butcher shop by 11:00 am ! Proud to say I never, ever tried it, nor will I !! Pies are my fave and I will eat them all, but my all time true love was my sweet Mother's Mince pie - she could really make a pie ! After that I think I would choose cherry.....

  24. Some food experiences that will haunt me for the rest of my days:

A local deli had samples of food but only one remained. Since I am one who never passes an opportunity to eat, I grabbed it and put that morsel in my mouth and it was -gasp- liverwurst. OMG, I spit it out onto the napkin. I won’t even wash a pan that liver is cooked in, much less eat it. That was the worst food experience.
Serves me right for being a hog...

And luckily I smelled a big fat lie when I was a young girl in Italy and my mother tried to get me to try tripe. She told me it was a hot dog. A hot dog?! I bolted out of that room. Hot dog, my foot. At least come up with a better lie!

Last, my late mil made some delicious dishes but was also known to substitute ingredients in recipes when she didn’t have the item or wanted to ‘lighten it up’. Once I ate something that looked like lasagne, smelled like lasagne but tasted like I don’t know what. And all of us had the toots the next day....

Thank you for your blog. It always puts a smile on my face!

  25. Oh, our giddy aunt, Sis. Oh course you're also on WW. Do share the one point muffin wonders recipe, please. I catapulted off the WW wagon over Christmas and am clawing my way back on.

  26. I joined WW so many times over a long period of time that if I lost one pound for every time I joined I'd be so skinny now! Way back when, they actually sold their frozen dinners at the meetings...that's how long I go back.

  27. Cherry, Cherry and um Cherry Pie for me!!
I too love liver and onions but draw a big fat line on blood sausage :o(

  28. Apple pie, my mother was the queen of homemade pie crust. Her recipe was one of the most valued item we inherited. Like you, my cursive handwriting is a work of art...I too thank the nuns for their Palmer method perfection.

  29. As much as I like sweets, I am not a fan of pie...and yes, I am a very picky eater! Good luck on your WW journey inspired by your new role as MOB perhaps??

  30. Katie, I am also dieting, not WW, but just a modified Whole30. I love anything sweet, and who could pass up a slice of pecan pie? I still have trouble when adults don’t use cursive! Have a great weekend!
