A Microwavable Hodgepodge

Hello, dear friends.  I hope that you are enjoying your week. Another one bites the dust.  Remember when I told you everything broke last week while the Mister was out of town?  Well, he's back now, but things keep breaking.  The sensor keeps going off on my dryer when the clothes are still wet.  The repairman is coming this morning.  It's lucky we have one of those Home Warranty policies because otherwise, it would be pretty bare under the tree this year.

1.  What title would you give the current chapter of your life?

I was sadly mistaken when I thought that I would stop worrying about my children when they became adults.

This is my usual text when I haven't heard from them:
ARE YOU ALIVE?
Type Y or N.

2.  December 6 is National Microwave Oven Day.  Who knew?  Besides popcorn and coffee reheats, what's the most common thing that you microwave?  Could you get along without a microwave?

I have not used our microwave since last week when I put it to work 2-3 times a day.  The week was a stressful one.  As I mentioned, everything I touched broke and the Mister was out of town on business.  I could not do my whining in person and had to resort to phone calls and pesty texts to my man.

As a result, I had the mother of all headaches for four days straight.  The tension spread down to my neck and shoulders so I sported this little fashion accessory which needs to be heated in the microwave.   It did the trick with a bottle of chardonnay and three times the recommended dose of Tylenol PM.

3.  If you could insert yourself into any Christmas carol and experience the lyrics in real life, which Christmas carol lyric would you choose and why?

Santa Baby for obvious reasons.
I can carry it off.

4.  Describe the most beautiful drive you have ever taken.

When we lived in Southern California, we loved to take a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway.

5.  What's something on your Christmas list this year?  (an actual list or figuratively speaking, either one).

Along with peace on earth and goodwill to man, health and happiness for my family and friends, a metabolism as fast as the speed of light, the energy of a 3-year-old, and Oprah's bank account, I requested this little item.

My #1 (our Cosmetic Queen) told me to try these daily peel pads a few months ago I really liked them.
Hint:  #1 - the box is empty.
Hurry up before I start showing my age.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

While doing research for an upcoming Friday Files, I came across Time Magazine's 25 Best Inventions In 2017.

Here's one of them.

This is a great gift for the persnickety coffee drinker on your list that you like a lot.  Leave the price tag on and they'll be really impressed.

Until next time...

  1. I send similar texts to my kids too. How is it possible that they could supposedly miss a text when they have their phones close by ALL the time?? Then there is my husband who put his phone (and wallet) on top of his car last night and then pulled out of the driveway to drive my son to practice. When the came home, they finally located the phone at the bottom of the driveway and found the wallet on the side of the road down the street. And it was raining so everything was soaked. Maybe the kids aren't the only ones I should be worried about... Great post! Enjoy your day!

  2. Oh Katie, I laughed out loud about text Y or N. I have sent the question many a time. One is married and I am still sending it:) However, I haven't thought to add "text Y or N." I am so borrowing that idea!!!

  3. I wrote a long comment and then my internet was out when I went to post and I lost it! To summarize...I love our home warranty, I see lots of "Are you alive" texts in my future, and those peel pads are magical! :) Have a wonderful Wednesday!

  4. Katie I feel your pain about the adult children. It is a fact of life no one told us about when the bundle was placed in our arms. I am going for a pedi today and one reason I enjoy it so is the microwavable pack she puts on my shoulders...just like the one you pictured. It is Lovely. Hope things get better at your house. Bless your Heart and I mean that sincerely.( Because you know Southerners are accused of saying that in a snarky way!!)lol.

  5. Loved this post--as I always love ALL your posts! I have not seen those face peels but they have piqued my curiosity. I will have to check them out.

Hope you have a stress-free (no break down) day! xo Diana

  7. Fun answers ... loved the Y or N text idea! When giving my answer to the microwave question, I had forgotten about how often I have used the microwave to heat a barley bag. Your photo for Santa Baby is hilarious!

  8. Wow! That is a pretty special coffee cup! I found the Black Friday deals Amazon thought I would be interested in ... well ... interesting. One of them was a puzzle with over 40,000 pieces! Assembled it would be over 22 feet long. While I do enjoy puzzles, this one doesn't tempt me in the least. My house wouldn't even be big enough for it.

  9. Hope all your repairs are finished soon - I know you are dying to get into the kitchen to bake for the holidays and cook your holidays dinners :-) Santa Baby is my all time fav Christmas song and I have many versions on my play list, which is on all day long!!

  10. My boys are all in their 20s and 30s, and I still send the same text as you, especially to the one living in Los Angeles. I never thought of the Y or N part though- will have to try it soon. Sherri

  11. I'll have to take that drive sometime. It does look amazing! And I love your intro with the quote from my hero, Lord Grantham. xoxo And what's with these kids who can't even respond to a text message??? We make it so easy for them! And yet they can still ignore us? LOL

  12. A fun post as is your usual... and yes, I think all us empty nesters deal with little communication... Somehow we missed it when it came to teaching the need to let mama in on some news.... Our daughter certainly saw how communicative we were expected to be with our parents... oh, well!!! Merry Christmas!

  13. All I can say for grown kids and communication is have patience! I used to send the same kind of texts then something miraculous happened.....their frontal lobes kicked in and suddenly I'm just a fountain of wisdom and knowledge. It is a huge boost that the daughter is pregnant and whether it's hormones or just the nurturing instinct that caused some sympathetic gene to engage, she's all about asking my opinion and input on just about everything. She even calls now for no reason at all. Shocking. And the son is finishing grad school and actually seeks counsel on all things job hunting. It truly is a miracle that somehow the mister and I seemed to have purchased a clue or two just in time for the kids to benefit from our sage advice. If only the mister and I had shopped for this wisdom years ago.........

I am not able to listen to "I'll Be Home For Christmas" without a couple of tears welling forth..........we live away from our children, having sought warmer climes for our aging bones. Merry Christmas- adore your adventures and humor!

  14. LOL ... so right about the text! I have a senior in HS and a sophomore. I can already feel what your sharing coming my way. ;-)
As always fun answers to the Hodgepodge.
    Happy Christmas,

  15. I just want the chef to give me a thumbs up that he read my text!
We use our microwave all the time heating up leftovers, soup, hot chocolate, and that lukewarm cup of coffee. Hope you feel better soon. I can relate to those kinds of headaches! Santa Baby is a favorite here. Merry, Merry!

  16. I can so relate to #1. I think my phone number has been put on the family Do Not Call or Text list. I don't own a microwave. I threw it in the trash several years ago and haven't missed it a bit. It requires me to wait longer for my food, but that is probably a good thing. That is my favorite drive too and is the thing other than the weather that I miss most about living in southern California. xo Laura

  17. Hi Katie, thank you for stopping by my page today. I like your microwavable neck/shoulder wrap, I'm putting that on my Amazon list!

  18. If I bought that mug I wouldn't be able to afford the coffee to put in it. Ha! I can't stand it when things start breaking around here. The man can fix anything but he won't until he does and then he yells about it the whole time like the universe is against him and these things never happen to anyone else in life ever. Men. LOL

  19. I send similar texts to my girls too.....and they live right here in town! You guys have lived all over the country. I am wondering where your favorite place has been, and where you'd like to retire. Do tell sometime!
If I put one of those microwavable wraps in my oven, it'd come out smelling like bacon, as that's the thing I nuke the most. Love that Hormel no muss, no fuss microwavable bacon.
Here's hoping all your appliance dreams come true.

  20. Oh, Katie, broken "stuff" is for the birds and sooooo aggravating, especially when the Hubs is not available. You always make me chuckle. Hope the rest of your week is uneventful.

  21. I love the Hodge Podge...my friend Carla participates in it! What is that coffee cup contraption? I must needs one!

  22. I think that a scenic drive in the fall in New England is my favorite.
I made a brief but varied Christmas list for my family, but apparently no one needs my ideas/preferences this year because they all have their own "good" ideas...Ugh oh.

  23. Katie,

I think the real worrying begins when the kids grow up and move out. You can't protect them from all the things they manage to get themselves into accidentally or not. It bogs the mind. All I can do is relinquish all over to the Master. My kids ignore my texts for one reason or another. They are a moody broody threesome so I learned to not stress over it when I don't hear back from them. Have a good day and thanks for visiting. :)

  24. Kate, my husband tells me our MW is the most expensive appliance we own since about the only thing I use it for is bacon, bacon and bacon. Not that we eat much of the stuff but on weekends and when we have family here for breakfast. I do reheat leftovers when we have them. I've got to scroll back through so I can check out the expensive coffee gift. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Oh yes, texting and Skype is my name............

  25. That shoulder thing looks like a must have to me! As much as I loved living in Cali, and driving hwy 1, the most beautiful drive I've ever taken was the Natchez Trace through Mississippi to Natchez, just incredible! I hope your luck changes Katie, and don't worry, even though your children are "adults" they always need their mama! {or $}

  26. My daughters are 40 and 42 and I still worry about them, except now I also have four grandchildren that I have to add to the worry list. Fortunately, they all live near to me, so I can easily pop over to check on them!

  27. You will never, ever stop worrying about your children. My dad did it to me. I'll do it to them. It's what we do!

  28. I laughed out loud when I read your first paragraph because I used "another one bites the dust" as one of my current chapter titles! My mom died when I was a teenager and my dad died when I was a very young adult so I have no points of reference but I've been amazed at how much I still worry about my kids. I would love to chat with my parents about whether or not they worried once my older two sisters were grown.

PACIFIC COAST HWY!When I went to school down there in L.A. all I remember about that road was SAND BAGGING THE STARS HOMES for the rains!!!!!!
AS for your headache.......SO SORRY!I have been fighting them for over a YEAR!Finally acupuncture has HELPED ME!

  30. I haven't driven the southern part of the PCH, but we really loved the northern route. Those fires on the southern end right now are really scary. I saw today one jumped the highway. My mom was worrying about a situation with one of my siblings just the other day and she's 87, so I guess it never ends. Have a great weekend!

  31. I am sorry to hear about your breakage. Stuff often broke or got lost when I was away. Whenever I go away for a few days I ask a friend to be on call to assist my beloved SWMBO as needed. Stuff still breaks but it doesn't have to wait for me to get home. I do the same for friends who may be travelling.
My son lives in San Diego. The last time we visited we got to drive a portion of the PCH.
Thanks for visiting my blog page and for leaving a comment. Have a great week.
