The Friday Files

I hope that all is well in your world. If I could describe this week in one word, it would be soggy.  We have had some wicked rainstorms.  It did not dampen our spirits, however.

We have boarders!  They settled in a cozy spot in the wreath on our door.  Mama Bird is very smart.  We have double doors, but we only use one of them.  She settled her nest on the door that we do not use.

As with all good stories, this one has a bit of mystery.  On Wednesday, there were six eggs, and now there were only three.  There is no sign of broken eggshells in our doorway or in the nest. The Mama Bird is as big as a minute, so we don't think she moved them.

Any Ornithologists out there?
(Yup, I looked that one up.)

Take a tour of this charming 1890s Maine cottage renovated by Peter Codella and designed by Kate McElhiney.

The Mister would die for this gorgeous garage!

This lovely home is located on the North Shore of Massachusetts.  It was renovated and designed by Carpenter & MacNeille.

My little grandmother, Margaret, was a school teacher for forty years.  She was a stickler for good grammar.  This item argues whether the term whom should be retired. Margaret will be rolling in her grave!

Speaking of words... when I was young, I always thought the phrase was power for the course.  Obviously, I did not come from a golfing family.

My #1 says play it by year.

I don't have the heart to correct her.

Here is a list of the most commonly misused phrases.

Do you have one?

This is an inside look at what it's like being a member of a traveling book club.

Do you know who this gent is?
Nope, he's not the new Pope.
He is the Golden Bachelor!

Did I watch it last night?

You betcha!!

Trailer

This started off strong, but it's gone from silly to ridiculous.

This is the best season yet.

I'm watching this, and I'm hooked.

I don't know what I love more... the gorgeous homes, stunning clothes, or Jon Hamm.

The Mister loves the watches and cars.

Grantchester won't be back until June, but here's a sneak peek.

I remember the first one featuring Carol Burnett and Alan Alda.
Fun fact: Alan Alda wrote the script.

Speaking of Carol Burnett, we share a birthday, which is tomorrow. The Mister surprised me with a little celebratory getaway next week!  I look forward to seeing you on my return.

  1. Katie, do you have crows or blackbirds in your neighborhood? We have had many nests at our home, some of them belonging to Goldfinches so the eggs are pretty small. The crows are experts at removing the eggs whole from the nest! We have seen it! You would not believe the steps we have taken to protect the nests so the bigger crows cannot fly in, but the parents seem to understand what we crazy humans are doing!

  2. Sorry to say, but it’s probably a small snake. They will clean out a nest in no time and because they swallow the whole egg, no trace left behind.

  3. A great post as always, filled with great links and lots of temptation. 😂 I’m with your grandmother Margaret; can we please stop dumbing down everything? End of sermon… have a Very Happy Birthday and a wonderful time on your getaway! 🥳 You deserve it. Jo

  4. Hi Katie,
I’m so sorry about the two eggs missing. That must have really got your brain going. What a surprise to see them disappear.

  7. Happy Birthday! My front and side doors' wreaths have had a lot of bird action over the years. The first time a bird built a nest in one, the top half of the door was glass so we all watched the eggs hatch. But the mama bird left such a mess on my lovely wreath, glass and door, that I had to discard the wreath - and I never let another bird build a nest in one of my wreaths, which took a lot of tenacity every spring. One time I removed a large, quickly constructed robin's nest from my front door wreath and carried it 20 feet to a bush - I could hear the robins screeching. The next morning, that nest was not on the bush but rather back on my same wreath - how did the robin carry the large wreath back to my door?!? Eventually I found that crumpled tubes of foil laid on top of the wreaths plus small plastic snakes placed all over the wreaths kept the birds away.

    1. Robins have been known to enlist the help of seagulls, they have them carry the heavy stiff.

  8. I wanted to stop by and wish you a smashing birthday, Lovey! I hope Lucy will be part of your celebration.
Bless her heart, we used to have the sweetest country friend who cleaned our home. We have many "Bertha-isms" as we call them, and remember fondly, some of which have traveled throughout my family's vernacular, far and wide. The most common is "I have no ideal". : )

  9. I think it was a snake that got two eggs and will be back for the others. I’m not sure what kind of bird has these colored eggs. I would guess robin, but you said the bird is very small. Happy birthday and have a wonderful trip. RHill, TX
