I hope all is well in your world. North Texas has been blessed with some picture-perfect weather, so I've got no complaints.
Our weekend was busy. We met the Adorables for lunch on Friday at P.F. Changs. We hadn't been there for quite a while, and my lettuce wraps were positively delish. And the company was delightful.
We had lunch with Miss Lucy and her parents, which is always a delight. It's been a few weeks since we saw her, and I can't believe how chatty she is!
And she is smart as a whip! Lucy checks out the stock market every hour on the hour. Obviously, she is pleased with her investments.
It's never too early to celebrate a birthday. Miss Lucy's is at the end of the month. Our wonderful waiter at Le Biboquet brought out this little treat with a candle.
Lucy was not so sure about the candle, but loved the chocolate mousse.
The Water Lies is a somewhat complicated story that revolves around a woman, a child, and a fertility clinic. The story begins with a bang when heavily pregnant Tessa's toddler recognizes a woman in a coffee shop and calls her Gigi. That same woman was found dead in a canal the next morning. This was a fast read and kept me riveted through the pages.
My first book of 2026, and I could not put it down. The book focuses on the Mayday killer, who strikes on May 1st, killing some and sparing others. Jules is one of the lucky ones and shares her silent years later with an old friend who first crossed her path in high school, and then they become very close friends as adults. This book is Finley's best. It is 95% edge-of-your-seat suspense and 5% violence, so sensitive readers need not worry about gruesome scenes. This is the perfect book for a flight or a day at the beach.
I still can't believe that Family Drama is a debut novel. By the 4th page, I knew it was special. It focuses on a famous soap opera actress, Susan, who puts her acting career first above all else. Her husband, Al, is left to pick up the pieces by raising their two children. Even though Susan was the star, Al was the heartbeat of the family. Rebecca Fallon's sharp writing kept me hooked, along with her beautifully crafted characters. I can't wait for Fallon's next book.

Chris Bohjalian is one of my favorite writers. As with all of his books, The Jackal's Mistress is beautifully written with multi-dimensional characters. The backdrop is the Civil War. Libby manages her family's grist mill. The two people who work for her are slaves that she has set free. Libby's husband is a Confederate soldier, and in a Union prison. Captain John Weybridge is a Union officer and is found near the battlefield in rough shape. Libby takes him home and nurses him, which puts everyone in great danger. This story's plot is based on a true story.
Land Of Dreams has got it all - 1930s Hollywood setting, famous stars and beautiful people, and a movie studio harboring scandal and secrets. Frankie works for the powerful studio head, Nico. Her main job is to act as the fixer of all sticky situations that the stars get themselves into. I enjoyed every minute of this book.
The Daring Times of Fern Adair was a delightful surprise. It takes place in Chicago in the 1920's. Fern is the daughter of a wealthy couple who are trying to get her married off. Unfortunately, Fern has an unsightly scar on one side of her face, which causes her great embarrassment. She meets Cal, who is the enforcer in a mobster world, and there is immediate attraction. They secretly start seeing each other until her brother finds out. This book moves quickly and is equal parts suspense and romance.

The Only One Who Knows follows Minnow, a morning show host who is adored by her viewers. She knows that it's her looks and her perkiness that draw the audience. One morning, she has a meltdown on air, and within minutes, she is shown the door. She has nowhere to go except back to her hometown in Kangaroo Bay. She moves in with her brother, who runs the family's shark-fishing business. Minnow discovers an ugly little secret in this town and does some investigating in order to get back to journalism. This book was good, and I look forward to reading more of Matlin's books.
Cady is a successful event planner and content with her life until her identical twin is murdered. Naturally, she is devastated. It doesn't take long for the reader to catch on that Cadie is an unreliable narrator. This made the story even more intriguing. This novel is a fast read and full of twists and turns. It kept me guessing to the bitter end.
I tried, but just couldn't get into it.
