Beauty Hits and Misses

I hope all is well in your world.  For my friends in the Northeast, I remember those wicked snowstorms.  I feel your pain.

I checked a few things off my to-do list this weekend.  I voted in the primary.  Texas has gone back to paper ballots.  Nothing like taking the system backwards.  After I filled out the ballot, I proudly handed it to the lady who put it through the machine.  In less than 30 seconds, it spat it back out.   The disappointed lady told me I failed to fill in two of the bubbles fully.

* I thought this, but didn't say it because the machine was the judgey one.

I took the ballot back and filled in every bubble with vigor.
I gave it to the lady with a confident smile, the almighty machine approved it, and I lost my footing and accidentally kicked the machine on my way out.

A forewarning for November.

My last Beauty post was the first in a series.  Today is all about concealers.  I have a few areas that I need to camouflage.  Number 1 on my list is my rosacea on my cheeks and nose.  I can thank my Irish heritage for that one.  Depending on my sleep, my dark circles can rival a raccoon's.  Instead of bags, I feature crepey skin under my eyes.  And lastly, my pores are growing larger by the day.

Other than that, I am perfect.

One more thing.  I am not being paid by any of the beauty companies mentioned in today's post.  These are all my own empty thoughts and opinions.

This started off strong but creased after a few hours.

Years ago, I broke my nose, which resulted in two black eyes.  A dear friend of mine suggested I use Jane Iredale foundation and concealer to camouflage my war wounds.  Sure enough, they did the trick.
I now tap the powder over my liquid/cream foundation for extra coverage on my rosacea.  It works like a charm!

As you can see, I'm a big fan!

I like that I can mix the two colors to find my shade.
I use this on my scar too.

I partnered with Colleen Rothschild a couple of years ago.  There are two products that I fell in love with and continue to purchase to this day.  The first is this eye cream, which I use alone when my dark circles are not too bad.  On days that I look like I partied all night, I use it as a base with a lighter concealer on top.  Btw... a bottle lasts me over a year.

The second product is the hair mask that I use as a conditioner.

This one is very popular.  It has great coverage and, if not carefully applied, tends to crease.  Just a dusting of setting powder helps.

This one is all over Instagram.  It took me a couple of tries to get it right.  Once I did, I was impressed.  I love the applicator.  My advice is to start with a small amount and build coverage gradually.

When they claim full coverage, they are not kidding.
Use a gentle hand with this one.

Concealer & brightener
This did nothing for me.

No matter what color I choose in Bobbi Brown products, they all look yellow on me.  The texture is good, but I couldn't find an appropriate color.

I bought two different colors of this concealer, and neither worked for me.  After a couple of hours, it looked blotchy.

This starts strong but lacks staying power.

I use this cooling eye balm on no-makeup days.
It is not a concealer, but it helps with the crepey skin under my eyes.  I keep it in the fridge, and it feels great.

I've tried a lot of brushes, but this one remains my favorite.  Great bang for your buck, too.

I pat a smidge of this on my concealer to set it.
I have learned that a little goes a long way.

Drop a comment and tell me about your favorite concealer.

  1. Love these round-ups and the fact that you include the ones that didn't work for you as well as the ones you like. I also use and like the Colleen Rothschild tinted eye cream, but agree that it is very light as far as coverage goes. Haven't found the perfect heavier concealer yet, but am currently using Charlotte Tilbury's radiant concealer. Have also heard that RMS's hydra concealer is good for "mature" skin.

  2. Katie as always your honesty is much appreciated. “Influencers” swear by products only to have them fail for me. Thanks for saving me a few dollars. And you haven’t missed anything by moving! Wicked stohm!

  3. Katie, your. Log is my favorite! I always buy what you recommend. Colorescience makes a nice concealer that works for me unless I had a “no sleep” night. I also use their Flex 50 spf light make up. Both are very moisturizing. They can be set by powder or a spray. Thanks for all you info.

  4. I recently had an upper blepharoplasty and had terrible black eyes afterward. The Drmtlgy corrector was the only thing that covered them. It's amazing! For daily use now, I'm loving the Sarah Creal concealer. Love these beauty posts!

  6. Paper ballots? OMG. I agree with you. Backwards we go. Enjoyed your concealer reviews. I have used NARS concealer for years. It's just right. I have also used Dior which is a nice one.

  7. Voted yesterday in Rockwall County in Texas and it was all machines-sign in and voting. Would hate to go backwards in voting. Good info on foundation and coverups. So enjoy your all that you post. Thank you for all your helpful information.

  8. The amount of products I've had to pitch could fill a landfill so thank you for helping save the planet. You turned me on to Colleen Rothschild years ago and love her hair products so I'll try her illuminated concealer. Have you used any Jones Road products, for "mature skin?" Asking for a friend. Always love your beauty recommendations, thank you for doing the heavy lifting! KTG

  10. I love the Dr. Jart color correcting products for my rosacea. They are green BTW but I mix with my moisturizer and have great results. I often skip foundation and just add powder if needed. Also love their cooling masks. Just warn the mister as the rubber pieces you apply over the product are alarming.
