A Hodgepodge Hangover

Hello, dear friends.  Did you have a good Halloween?  I don't know about you, but I am feeling a bit under the weather with a chocolate hangover.  Who knew a few Butterfingers, Twix, M&Ms, Snickers, Zagnuts, Mounds, Sour Patch, Swedish Fish, Nestle Crunch, Hershey's Dark and Milk Chocolate bars, and Raisinettes could be so brutal on the system?

It's not my fault, though.  My two bosses made me taste at least three candies from each bag I opened to do a quality check for freshness.  As you can see from their poker faces, they don't kid around.  Especially the little one - she's tough.

But the show must go on...
It's time for Hodgepodge.

1.  What does/did Halloween look like at your house this year?  Did you decorate?  Pick pumpkins?

The mums and pumpkins have seen better days, but we made it to Halloween.

Expect trick or treaters?  Wear a costume to a party or event?  Make a costume?  Feel glad you didn't have to come up with a costume?  Cook a Halloween themed treat?  Eat leftover candy?

So glad we didn't have to come up with a costume this year.
I think we outdid ourselves last year.

2.  What are you waiting for?  Elaborate.

I am waiting for Thanksgiving to arrive for two reasons.

3.  Do you wish you were friendlier, braver, more creative, more athletic, or something else?  Explain.

I wish I were:

younger
taller
skinnier
athletic
MIT-smart
richer than Jeff Bezos

I wish I had:

 long legs
 full lips
 a button nose
a long neck
 a single chin
 flawless skin
a deep, sexy voice
 an accelerated metabolism

Other than that, I'm pretty comfortable in my skin.

4.  When it comes time to paint are you a do-it-yourselfer or do you hire someone?

The Mister is very gifted in many ways, but painting and wallpapering are not two of them.
As for me - I'm useless.

What was the last paint job completed in your house?  What room most needs painting now?

Does anyone remember Eldon from the show Murphy Brown?  He was the painter that never left.  That's how I felt when I moved into this house.  My Eldon and his two brothers, Darrel and his other brother, Darrel took seven long weeks to paint the inside of our house.  When they finally left, I felt like we were getting divorced.

Eldon, Darrel, and his brother Darrel will probably be back to do some touch-ups.

How do you feel about wallpaper?

There is only one room in our house that is wallpapered.  It is the powder room.  I positively love wallpaper and would do it in every room if the Mister consented.

5.  What is one specific thing that you felt gratitude for in the month of October?

I was grateful that it wasn't January.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

Oh, how I miss those days!

If you're looking for me today, I'm hiding in the closet finishing off the candy.

Until next time...

Yesterday at 3PM gearing up for the Barkathon which begins with the first doorbell chime.

  1. I loved this post so much, for so many reasons! We only got FOUR kids last night at our door (we are in a very small village at the end of a dead end street, but four???) This forced husband and I to put a significant dent into the mini chocolate bars and rockets that I bought under the assumption we would have many more trick or treaters. I feel rather sick. -Jenn

  3. I would love to Trick Treat at your house, if only so I could play with those cute fur creatures and maybe eat a Butterfinger, my favorite! Love the pics of your girls. I think we all wish we could bring back those days.

  4. I love reading your blog - something ALWAYS makes me laugh out loud! Love your list of wishes . . .I might have snorted while reading those. I, too, love having my children back in our home!

  5. I have to wait until Christmas to get all 4 girls home. There's only 1 who lives far away (8 hours, she's in Nashville) so the other 3 are always around which is great. But it's always that one who's missing that we think about not being here, you know? I hit the candy before it became leftover candy as well as once it did become leftover candy. And I wonder why I look the way I do. Sheesh.

  6. Good morning Katie! I'm always so entertained by your hodgepodge. A few houses ago I had one contractor and his team there so long that they thought I was their permanent job site. He even had a key so work could go on without me there. One morning I was late getting up and I heard a knock on my bedroom door. "Morning Linda, the coffee's not on. Should I start it?" I was so happy when they left that I never started the next project I had been planning. We never get a single trick or treater at this house because we are down a long, dark driveway in the middle of nowhere, and this year I was so good and only bought one bag of candies. Must be prepared just in case! Linda

  7. I loved Eldon...and I need him to show up here. We have lived in this townhouse nine years now and it is time for some freshening. I love the wallpaper in your powder room but I have had so many bad experiences with wallpaper that I have taken a vow to NEVER put it up again.

  9. We had painters in about a month ago and I felt the same way! They were always there and my house was in a constant state of disarray. It sucked!

  10. You make me laugh! I love that wallpaper too! I would not hesitate to use it anywhere! I have a monkey (almost chinoiserie feel) wallpaper in our powder room and although it is ten years old, I still love it.

  11. My painter is busy painting the exterior of the local hardware store. He texts me every once in a while, telling me he hasn't forgotten about me. I feel like he's a bad boyfriend. Meanwhile, I have crap EVERYWHERE. It's worth it to have a painter I can trust to be there when I'm not, so I put up with it.

  12. Whew...so many "yes I know this" for me today! I have the same photo of the gal in the black skinnies with the white jacket in my iPad what to wear photos. Like you, this outfit makes me think I am all of those other things you mentioned. Clothes make the woman! Yes, Eldon and the Darrel's are part of my everyday life in this business. Between you and me, they are getting old while we still look great. Love the pumpkin with the glasses and the squash is not to bad either. Lastly, I heard wallpaper was "back"...it should of never left! Happy midweek!

  13. I think you are perfect just the way you are, but too wish: I have a smaller butt, and thicker hair.

I think wallpaper is fabulous until you have to pay someone to take it down!

We did not get one trick or treater! Thankfully I bought mostly candy I do not like!

  14. Your posts always bring a smile. There were no trick or treaters here and so I have scads of candy. First time since living here for 14 years. That house is beautiful and so are your girls and your sweet doggies. I am with you on the wallpaper and the painting. I do remember Eldon and Murphy Brown. That was a funny show and we had a wallpaper hanger guy who seemed to stay around forever, too.

  15. When my neighbor in NJ moved into her house from across the country her painters from Las Vegas came with her and lived in her house for a couple of months. A good painter is hard to find! So much candy here-ugh!

  16. In The closet checking for freshness, right? I told my Mr. Nine I was done eating the goods and he caught me with nougat on my cheek! Lol! Whaaaat? How'd that get there? Yes, 1& 2, very beautiful young ladies to be thankful for!! Hey and in case I didn't tell you, you're BOO-TI-FUL!!!

  18. Thankfully, we had a slew of trick or treaters but I did stash some peanut M & M's for emergencies. All wallpaper in our home has been removed, except for the Pussywillow paper in the dining room which I still love. Have a wonderful week.

  20. Laughing out loud at your grateful comment that October isn't January.
Remember when we were in Catholic school and had All Saints' Day off? I loved that so much - eating candy all day while my public school friends had to go to school.....
Love the pictures of your girls as little trick-or-treaters. Special days and memories for me too.
    Happy November!

  21. Always great to start the day with some good laughs! Yeah, I raided my kids bags yesterday, I am sorry to say... I am obsessed with the wallpaper in your powder room! I wish I didn't have decorating commitment problems or I would definitely be doing some wallpaper around here!

  23. Katie,

I enjoy your humorous replies to the Hodgepodge questions. I, like you miss the days when my three kids were small and I shared photos of Halloween past of them on Tuesday. WOW, so much snow! Where on earth do you live? I'm happy we don't see that kind of accumulation. Heck, if we get a snowflake then Knoxville goes into a panic! We grew up in southern WV. The salt truck made routine runs to keep the road clear and school was never cancelled because of bad weather. The only time we got off the hook was if the bus had mechanical problems and unable to make its run. Guess what we prayed for? :) Thanks for dropping by and have a blessed week!

  24. We haven't had more than two or three tricker treaters for five or six years now, so finally this year I didn't buy any candy. Of course, the first thing my husband says is, "Where's the Halloween candy". I told him I didn't buy any this year because we never have many kids come by and end up eating it all ourselves. To that, he said, "Exactly".

  25. I MISS THOSE DAYS TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Ha! Is is a bad sign that I can't remember any of the questions I'm supposed to answer? No, wait. I love wallpaper! We have it in two rooms. I miss those days, too. ❤️

  27. We now get one-quarter of the kids that used to come to our house 10 years ago. What's has happened to all the kids?? And shame on them for sticking us with all the leftover candy we are forced to eat.

  28. Quality control? Poison tester is more like it -- like Caligula having people taste his food first. Hey, wouldn't the smart person to take out someone like that be the food tester? Tastes good (sneak, sneak...)!

  29. Your dogs always steal the show Katie! We don't get many trick or treaters, I just got back from the beach the day before and just raided the granola bars from the snack basket for my grandchildren in the pantry and gave those out. One kid actually said no thanks and put it back in the basket!! That's when I was wishing I had pulled one of the confusing tricks you suggested last week!! Last year I got a kid that gave candy back too because he was "gluten free" Next year I'm turning off the light!!

  30. I bought chocolate and no one came so guess who had to eat it?! Great post and your dogs are adorable.
