Can You Spell Discombobulated?

FlowchainSensei

Hello, dear friends.
I hope that you and your loved ones are in good health.
The above sign describes my state of mind to a tee.

Do you know how people choose a word at the beginning of the year to strive towards?  Well, I never got around to choosing one.  It was a tie between Spanx - wear more of them and wrinkles - get less of them.  For some reason, my family thought both words sounded a bit vain and self-centered.

I have chosen a word to describe this Corona challenge.  Discombobulated is not only fun to say, but also describes my mindset.

I find myself with limited retention skills. Distraction is my middle name.  I listened to an edge-of-your-seat thriller this week on my walk.  All of a sudden, the narrator announced, thank you for listening to Audible.
What?
I had to rewind to hear the spine-tingling ending of the story.

The Mister and I did our grocery shopping yesterday.  Our store opens at 7AM twice a week for Senior Citizens.  I thought for sure I was going to get carded, but I got lucky.  They probably thought that I was the Mister's young, hot caretaker.

We decided to buy enough food for two weeks.  The virus is supposed to spike within the next two weeks, and we didn't want to be anywhere near the frontlines.  Most people were very respectful when it came to social distancing.

There's always one, though.
There was one guy who came up to me within a two-foot distance and asked me where he could find the tartar sauce.

Huh?
And then I figured it out.
He thought I was too young to be there for Senior Citizen's Happy Hour.
He thought I was an employee.
One of the high school kids.
I'm sure of it.
When I relayed the story to the Mister, he answered with ear-piercing silence and a shake of the head.
He's such a jealous brute.

As I mentioned in my last post, the Newlyweds have been in quarantine in their tiny love nest in NYC for three and a half weeks.  We were a little worried about Adorable Jonathon.  Our girl tends to get a bit persnickety when under duress.
I can't imagine who she gets that from!

We've got to keep them happy, especially AJ.
He's is the best thing to happen to our family in years.

So we asked them if they wanted to come here and stay for a few weeks.  It took them less than a millisecond to come to a mutual decision.

They thought that was a good idea.

So, I am happy to report that tomorrow morning the lovebirds are renting a car and headed to our house.

I look forward to making many magical memories.

In the meantime, our Dallas chickadee will stay nestled in her nest.
We thought that it was safer than getting on a flight.
She agreed to Facetime us every night at dinnertime so that we can enjoy our dinners together.

It's amazing how life can change within a blink of an eye.

A couple of months ago, I was in search of the perfect mascara.

My sights are set on other things these days.

Be well.

Until next time...

  1. You amaze me Kate! You made the most fun-to-read, interesting, entertaining and informative post out of what I probably would have written, "Hey ya'll, my kids are coming!" Thank you for being my source of levity this Friday morning. The only discombobulated part of my life right now is remembering our last conversation for proof of what I actually might have said.

  4. Katie, that word is totally perfect.
I am so happy your #2 and Adorable are headed to you. I know as a mama that is the best thing for you. It is like having them with you makes it better somehow.
    Stay well!

  7. Discombobulated is the perfect word. I think if we're honest we all feel that somewhat. And so wonderful that your daughter and hubby are headed your way. Enjoy every moment of the time!

  8. A fun post, just what we all needed! I was on a mascara search too. I tried the L'oreal Bambi eyes. I like it. I took the waterproof version out of my cart because I'm not going to Hawaii, Palm Springs or on a cruise. Seriously, I had great plans and now I don't. Take care!

  13. Katie, is it Friday? As a dedicated library patron, I miss my books. I hope Amazon will deliver books. I am going to order a couple of your recommendations. I continue to be fascinated by anything about the Kennedy’s and Camelot. As for our stay at home life, can a house get smaller? Take care my friend.

  14. Katie, What was the spine-tingling book title? I am reading the 13th Juror.
Enjoy this time! I feel like I got a gift out of this crazy time with our youngest home. He was writing a history paper I was running blog title ideas with him. I asked him what it was like to wake up the past two Sundays without a hangover and he said, "Actually, mom Friday mornings are my rough mornings." Good to know. Mentioned you in an upcoming post about building a blog community. My son helped me with the title because my first title he said was too judgy! I call it judgementing. What were you listening to the other day.. the spine tingling book? laura

  15. Discombobulated is the perfect word for these times! I keep waking up every morning thinking that this was all a nightmare, but then realize that it will be another day of sheltering in place. It's really not too bad as long as I stay away from the news! I'm so glad daughter #1 and AJ will be coming to stay. Take care!

  16. That is the perfect word! I keep trying to stock up for 2 weeks worth of food but with 3 teenage boys (and the sorry state of our stores) that seems to be impossible.

  17. Great S.A.T. Word.... just in time for the test to be canceled. I don’t have one word...I have a phrase “reinventing the wheel”... what I have been doing this week learning to teach virtually & we all know the camera adds 20 pounds. Wonderful that the kids are headed to you, have a fabulous time enjoying your state mandated forced family fun....honestly I’d be thrilled, be safe... be nice to the Mister... you two will be role models for the newlyweds for the next several weeks or months or year?

  18. I giggled all the way through this post! Thank you for the levity no matter how discombobulated it is!!

  20. I always come away from here with laughs and smiles! I am so glad the “lovebirds” will be spending time with you all. I did struggle with the idea that my hubby and I are elderly! What, no way! Stay healthy Katie!

  21. I haven't been to the store since March 13. Rick has been shopping. I miss it. I can't believe I miss the grocery store, which my pulmonolgist, while reading the fear of god into me said was the most dangerous place to be except the hospital. Swell. So, Rick goes. But oh, I miss it... I feel weird giving him my junk food list.

  23. I'm a huge fan of discombobulation, Sis. Isn't this just a peach of a time? My-two-same-age-as-your-two back at home roommates are really happy that we all have rooms we can escape to separately every now and then. Like 24 times a day. However, I am delighted to report that we picking up new skills. My son googled "F21 washing machine alarm" and fixed the washing machine, my daughter is navigating the wondrous world of online teaching, we unplugged a bathroom sink as a team effort and my son is teaching me not to panic when I'm mysteriously locked out of my blog site. Silver linings are a godsend ...

  24. I'm glad your kids are getting out of the city. These are strange times for sure, and I'm feeling a bit discombobulated too. I find reading difficult as I struggle to maintain focus. I'm actually blogging more which I'm enjoying again. Not trying to squeeze it in around ten other things. Stay well!

  25. Katie, discombobulated might just be the most epic word to describe my current state of mind as well! Thanks for sharing this post and giving me a good chuckle. Stay safe and healthy!

  27. You’re so lucky to have 2/3 of your kids under your roof! I’ve got one son and his wife in San Francisco who have been in lockdown for three weeks, one son in Philadelphia in lockdown for two weeks and a daughter in Atlanta where they just opened the pool at her apartments and the idiot governor just figured out something was amiss! Talk about stress! I bought David Lebovitz’s book Drinking French and have been following him on Instagram as he makes a selection of drinks (sometimes with guests including his adorable partner Romain). Then I try the drinks here at our cocktail hour (he is on at noon our time - 6pm Paris time). Quite the stress reliever!

  29. SO happy for you that your babies are coming to be with ya'll. All of ours, all three families, are quarantined in different houses at our deer camp property. And thats only about 40 minutes away from my house. Killing me that my grandbabies are so close, yet so far away because I can't touch them or hold them....
    Relish every second!
