A Tribute to Nurses

Hello, dear friends.  I hope that all is well with you.  Did you know that it is National Nurses Week?  In honor of this auspicious occasion,  I am re-publishing a post from last year as a tribute to all the wonderful nurses that have crossed our paths.

During both of the births of my girls, I was fortunate enough to have caring nurses coach me through my many (seems like hundreds) hours of labor.  They held my hand and gave me encouragement.   The Doctor, in both instances, waltzed in during the last minutes to deliver my babies and then promptly handed over my precious girls to a capable nurse.

I haven't talked about it on the blog, but my #2 has faced two serious illnesses during the past five years.  She has totally recovered now.  We were fortunate enough to have great nurses by her bedside during her hospital stays.  It was very important to me that she received the best care and utmost attention when I wasn't at the hospital with her.

I am blessed with many friends that are nurses.  I'd like to mention one in particular.  My friend Mary, the original Sudbury Sweetheart, is a nurse in ICU at Children's Hospital.   I am sure Mary has witnessed some very sad scenes.  She never talks about her work.  Mary has such a sweet smile and kind manner.  I am sure that she is an angel to the desperately ill children and their parents at the hospital.

If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know that I am a huge fan of Kelly Corrigan.  I've written several posts featuring her videos and I even had the opportunity to meet her.  You can read about it here.

Kelly gives a beautiful tribute to nurses in the video.

In closing, a heartfelt thanks to all the nurses who have helped our family through some tough times.

You are truly our unsung heroes.

Have you had a special nurse touch your life?

Until next time...

  2. I'm sorry to hear your daughter had a struggle with her health. I hope that is all in the past. Not easy for her, or for you I'm sure. Yes, it is the nurses that are front and centre, and a kind, skilled one makes all the difference. -Jenn

  3. Even though I have not worked as a nurse in many years. I am proud to say that all my nursing education has been a plus as a mom raising children. It has also allowed me to be a mentor to many of my friend, explaining medical jargon etc. In this day and age every patient needs an advocate who can explain and mentor through illnesses. My son had a serious illness several years ago and when my husband said something about the fact that I did not have a license anymore, the GI doc looked directly at my DH and said, "Once a Nurse, always a Nurse." And that is so true. I have been impressed with several of the nurses that have crossed my path and I am glad to see that the profession is carrying on valiantly. Thanks for recognizing nurses on your blog Katie.

    1. Arlene, the rest of that quote goes like this: "Once a nurse, always a nurse, it's like the Mafia. You can't get out, you know too much!" :)

  4. So sorry that your sweet daughter had to endure illness, but so happy she's recovered! You are right on target in highlighting the dedication, kindness and expertise shown by those in the nursing profession. When I was in the hospital last October, I saw firsthand how attentive and intelligent they are. Yippee - yay-yay for nurses everywhere!!!

  8. I have always felt that nurses are the heroes in the hospital, often not getting the credit they deserve! My Mom lived with us for the last 5 years of her life and was admitted to the hospital over 30 times in the last 2 years. the NURSES were the ones who saved her life many times and made her feel comfortable all the time. I could never have thanked them enough. My daughter has 2 best friends and one is a nurse. It is a wonderful profession and I wish we had more. It takes a VERY special person to be a nurse.

  9. This is a wonderful tribute, Katie. I have to say a nurse touched my life a couple of weeks ago when the pre-op nurse called me. I'd had some funky blood tests which didn't delay the surgery but require follow-up and I didn't understand the results. And Google scares the heck out of me. It was near the end of the day and I'm sure she wanted to go home because who wouldn't but she took a great deal of time with me, going over results and explaining things. Made a huge diff in my anxiety level. I was glad she was working the day of surgery -- I got to meet her and give her a note. Yes, nurses can make ALL the difference!

  10. Ok. Kudos to nurses and especially ICU nurses!!! Heal many patients and many broken hearts. I too love Kelly Corrigan. If you enjoy her book describing the Corrigan clan, you will really like the late Tim Russets book "Big Russ and Me, Father and Son: Lessons of Life". It's not a recent book but one you would enjoy

  11. Amen and amen and amen, Katie. After working in a hospital for years I know the heartfelt care that most nurses give to patients. I have witnessed nurses and staff leave a room, go into a hall, and shed tears that they couldn't let the patient see.

My husband is a chaplain and he loves so many of the nurses that he deals with daily-those that call him at home to talk or run something by him...those nurses that are concerned enough to wake us up at midnight to come and minister to a patient that they feel needs comfort.

God bless our nurses-this was a wonderful post, Katie.

  12. I had a very caring and concerned nurse that cared for me after my first hip replacement. My blood count remained unusually low 24 hours after the surgery. And I felt like crap. Sorry to use that term, but I did. She finally hounded the on call doctor so much, he agreed to a blood transfusion late that night. Two pints were administered. I awoke the next morning feeling like a different person. I will always be grateful for her care and her determination to get me the treatment I needed...Maxine.
