Books and Movies

Hello, dear friends.  How was your weekend?  I had a great one.  It began on Friday when I met my Sista at the Brimfield Fair.  It was our first time to the antique mecca, and it was quite an experience.  I took lots of pictures that I will share with you soon.  Saturday, we had dinner with my BFF, Anne, and her handsome hubby and  Sunday was spent in Maine having lunch with the Mister's family.

Movies I have seen.

The Mister and I saw this flick a couple of weeks ago.  The Mechanic is a poor man's James Bond in a wet suit.

The Mister didn't even like it.
Shocker!

This is the first movie in a long time that I watched and wished that I had read the book before seeing it.  I positively loved the story, the acting, and the sumptuous cinematography.

Movies I can't wait to see.

I don't care how good or bad the movie is - the thought of spending two hours with Dr. McDreamy gives me heart palpitations.

I would watch Tom Hanks read a phone book.
I love all his movies, my favorite being Sleepless in Seattle.

Books I recently read/listened to.

Another book that I listened to on my walks.  Lots of twists and turns in this one about a kidnapping.  I sent it to my #1, and she loved it.

Synopsis

I came late to the party on this one.  Heard great things about it and this is my book club's choice.  I can see why it was such a hit - great story line.

Synopsis
Lovable characters and a sweet story with just enough cutting edge. No pun intended.
I didn't want this book to end.

New Releases that are on my gotta read and gotta give list.

Lots of secrets in this "perfect" woman's life.
Sounds right up my alley.

Synopsis

Have you ever been so bogged down that you fantasized about driving past your exit and taking a mental health holiday?  This book has your name on it.

This one has gotten a lot of hype.  I've read other books by Patchett and enjoyed them.

Amazon

Liddon's second plant-based cookbook.  My #2 will probably see this in her Christmas stocking.

Amazon

Raving reviews on the beauty of this book.  Everything you need to know about selecting and preparing vegetables according to the almighty Martha.  I ordered this one for my vegetarian friend.

Synopsis

I'm one of Nora Ephron's biggest fans.
I'll probably listen to this one on my walks.

Carol and I share the same birthday, and I couldn't be prouder.  This is another one that I look forward to listening to on my walks.

Any reviews or suggestions for me?

Until next time...

  1. Love this post, Katie! I talked about The Light Between Oceans today in my post. Too sad for me!! My husband and I both thought it was absolutely the saddest thing ever. People walking out loved it though so I guess it was just us.

I'm going to find the Carol Burnett book. :)

  3. Our book club read The Light Between Oceans, but I never managed to get through it all. The beginning was too slow for me.

  4. Thanks for the great recommendations, Katie! I listen to music on my walks/runs, but I'm thinking listening to a book might be a great idea.

  5. I have not been to the movies in so long, I love to watch them at home because if I don;t like them I can read magazines, get up and walk around and do other things.

Reading is a different story, I love it and could do it all day, everyday! I am reading My Grandmother Asked me to Tell you she is sorry by lFredrik Backman, the author of A Man called Ove.

    Have a great week!

  6. Bridget Jones and Sully are on my to-see list too. Along with The Girl on the Train, which comes out in October. I loved the book and can't wait to see the movie.

  7. You are in for a treat at the movies. Sully was a very good movie, and Tom Hanks does not disappoint. For some reason I found it more moving than other movies I have seen recently. You will enjoy it.

Also thank you so much for your literary recommendations. I am looking forward to diving into several of them during this beautiful Nebraska fall weather.

  9. We saw Sully last Friday and it is awesome...can't recommend it enough but you'll be on the edge of your seat. I'm not a good 'flier/flyer"(SP?) so it really made me anxious.

I read a sample of The Couple Next Door on my Kindle, seemed like it was pretty good but haven't bought the book yet.

Today is my birthday and I'm having a great time! Picked up my oldest granddaughter who was out of school today for an in-service day and we had a mani/pedi and lunch. Now we're home, she's napping on the sofa and we're waiting for Pop to get home so more spoiling (for her) can begin! I love days like this.

    Have a great week Katie!

  11. I am reading The Couple Next Door right now. OH MY! So far, I'm about two thirds of the way in and it's really annoying me that I have to have a life right now because I really want to spend it reading! (I'm making up excuses to go to the bathroom -- with my book of course! Pretty soon they'll think I have a bladder infection!)

  12. The Light Between the Oceans was one of my favorite reads the year it came out (haven't seen the movie yet). I may go see the film this week while hubs travels. I think my daughter wants to go too since we both read the book.

  13. Thank you for all of the intriguing book and movie recommendations, Katie! I'm looking forward to reading and watching them and trying recipes from the cookbooks! I need to learn more about plant-based recipes and expanding my vegetable selections. Hope you have a wonderful evening.

  15. I've made a list. Thanks for the recommendations. Can't wait to hear what you thought about Brimfield. Did you bring home treasures? I went years ago, but the chef was with me. Suffice it to say we didn't last very long. Ha! Round Top is just weeks away. I never miss it spring or fall.

  16. The Brimfield Fair is an adventure - looking forward to hearing about your day and what you and Sista bought.
Let us know how you and the Mister liked Sully. I love Tom Hanks in all his movies too.

  17. I love your book and movie reviews! I remember actually sobbing at the end of The Light Between Oceans when I read it. It may be a movie I need to see at home. I'm jealous that you got to go to Brimfield. I wanted to go for so long, but now that I'm getting older, I don't have much more room for things. I mean, how many yellowware bowls can a person display? My daughter doesn't really want to inherit all this stuff. She said she'd keep one bowl if I let her actually use it!

  18. Did you run into Lara Spencer at the Fair? I think it's her favorite place. I'm going this afternoon to see Sully with my oldest. (I own You've Got Mail and know every line in the movie)

  19. Bridgette Jones is at the top of my list to see and I haven't heard about the Carol Burnette or Nora Ephron books, so I look forward to those!

  22. Loved Orphan Train...need to read the Carol Burnett book...she is a fave. Can't wait for Bridget Jones and was wondering about the Oceans movie...as far as Sully, I was driving my number 2 to Connecticut to visit the college he eventually attended. We were driving over the GW Bridge in NYC right after it happened so I feel very connected to that movie.

  23. Oh, Sis. I've booked this Thurs to see Bridget with a fellow Bridget fan (you'd love her, naturally) and cannot, absolutely cannot, wait to see Sully. I, too, could wile away the hours listening to Tom read the phone book. My niece went to a screening for The Light Between Oceans a few weeks back and she texted me when they were driving home, advising me to go as soon as it opened. I've yet to see it. Thanks for the nudge. Loved Orphan Train and am so excited to see it come to life on the BIG screen. As for a poor man's James Bond in a wetsuit - I'll give it a miss, thank you. Loved Nottinghill and the roomie's donning of Hugh's wetsuit was enough of a jar ...

  24. I recommend The Widow by Fiona Barton. It is set in the London area, written by a former reporter, and is full of twists and turns. I am waiting for the Ann Patchett to be delivered. Thanks for the heads up on the book about Nora Ephron -- she died too soon.

  25. Oh I can't wait to see Bridget Jones either! I think I will take my mom and daughter for a girls night out! I'm also adding on to my monstrously long reading list. Katie you give the best recs!!!

  26. I'm not sure I can watch Sully since I spend a lot of time on airplanes. That might freak me out a bit. Love, love, love Carol Burnett. Thanks for the reminder to set my DVR to record WWHL tonight - Carol Burnett and Andy Cohen. I wonder who will be behind the bar.
