A Half in the Bag Hodgepodge

Good morning, dear friends.  I hope you are having a fabulous week.  If it's Wednesday, it's time for Hodgepodge.

1.  What does retirement mean to you?  Are you planning for it, not thinking about it, looking forward to it, dreading it?

I have been somewhat retired since I had #1.  Between you and me, I am not looking forward to the day the Mister retires for a few reasons.  I picked up hints of what our life would be like when he retires from when he takes the day off.

*  Every 20 minutes he asks what we are going to do that day.
I pretend I don't hear him.

*  He expects me up, dressed, and ready to go by 8am.
I never am.

*  He always wants to know where I am going, even if it's just to another room.
I tell him that I'm going to meet my boyfriend.

*  When I tell him that I am going to the store, he asks me what I need.
I tell him Preparation H.

* He is a compulsive snacker.  He never misses the opportunity to offer me a cookie or chip.
I read him the calories on the box.

What does retirement mean to me?
A lot of work.

2.  It's International Guitar Month... do you play?  Does anyone in your family play?  What's a song you especially like to hear played on the or a favorite song featuring a guitar?

I took guitar lessons when I was young.  I can play the song 500 Miles but please be patient - it takes me about 20 minutes to change a chord.

I like anything and everything by James Taylor.

3.  What's your comfort food?

Peanut butter.
I don't even need a spoon.

4.  What's one activity or area of your life where you absolutely never procrastinate?

Catching up on my shows.

5.  Who does the grocery shopping in your house?  Does your local store bag the groceries for you or is it a  do-it-yourself kind of place?  Do you like someone packing your groceries?

The Mister loves to do the grocery shopping. The only drawback is that he likes to buy a lot of junk food.

I love to have my groceries bagged for me.  I just wish the baggers would go that extra step and come home with me and put the stuff away.

Is that too much to ask?

6.  What's the coolest thing that you've seen in nature?

I don't know whether it is the coolest, but I usually run into this charming couple on my walks every day.

7.  Share a favorite quote about home.

No matter how much fun we had on vacation, it's always nice to come home and sleep in our own beds.

8.  Insert your own random thought.

Last night, I was flipping channels and came across my very favorite movie scene of all time.  I must have seen My Best Friend's Wedding a million times.

What's your favorite scene in a movie?

Until next time...

If you are looking for Chowdah & Chili this weekend, they will be in training.

I'm Katie. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am an empty nester meandering through my middle-aged years while entangled in the never-ending process of renovating an antique home on the South Shore of Massachusetts. I love to write about books, movies, TV, celebrities, decorating, and weekend adventures. My favorite writing material is derived from my family: the Mister, my girls, #1 and #2, and my two untrainable, rambunctious pups, Chowdah and Chili.

  1. Morning, Katie! Thank you for the laughs this morning! You never disappoint! I can so relate what you wrote about retirement. Chris and I joke all the time that we're going to drive each other bonkers when he retires. Of course, I'll probably never even see him. He'll be on the golf course from sun up to sundown. Such is life!

  2. These are fun! I love retirement, love it! Since Rick and I live in different houses, I don't think I'll have the issues of the dog on your heel, though. Whew! But he does play magnificent classical guitar. (Another benefit of two houses -- I don't have to hear repetitive practicing!) And I'm with you on the bagging and store! Oh, all these make me smile, especially your "conversation" with the Mister!

  3. Oh Katie you crack me up! Does any wife look forward to retirement? I do because I feel bad that he's working so hard but really...they do eat all the time. :)

You and I really should hang out! Peanut butter and James Taylor...my faves too.

  4. Oh my gosh-we absolutely LOVE that scene in My Best Friends Wedding! My hubs has that same 'Where are you going-what are you doing now?' gene. He gets it from his own dad and it makes me bonkers. He knows the women in my family need space, so after he'd been home a couple of weeks he learned to find an errand to run by himself now and then : ) You figure out the 24/7 togetherness but it's a process.

  5. I'm so sorry to be missing the Hodgepodge today. I had to leave town before I knew what the questions were. So, instead, I scheduled a post about my kitty. Anyway, totally with you on James Taylor and peanut butter!!! Xxxxxxx My favorite movie scene? Last scene in You've Got Mail with Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and Barkley?? in a group hug. It was the dog that got me. Love that scene. It's one of the handful of movie scenes that make me cry.

  7. Love these posts! And of course I love the goldens! I saw that video on my facebook page and must have viewed it 10 times...just SO precious! Regarding retirement...I don't even want to think about that. My husband makes too many messes in the kitchen now. I just can't imagine having him home all day. He better come up with some productive hobbies before that happens or else I will be getting a job outside the home...with lots of travel!

  8. Yes to anything by James Taylor!
My dad has been semi-retired for a few years and for a time, my mom was home too and she said he drove her nuts. She is very glad she went back to work!

  9. Your answers always crack me up! I'll have to watch "My Best Friend's Wedding". I don't remember seeing it but love Julia Roberts. One of my favorite movie scenes is from "The Wedding Singer" when they are on the plane and Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore end up together :)

  10. Love you mix my friend!! I played guitar as a girl and can still play a few stanzas of Love Me Tender! And PB on a spoon is my go to, I even have my own jar hid from the men in the house, lol!! ;-)

  11. You are so right about the hubby retiring. Only I wish it could be 8:00 that is the time he is wanting us to go. Try 6:00. I have him trained now, not to bother me before 7:00 on Saturdays. He is an early riser and drives me nutty with it.
I love the video of the Goldens taking the groceries in. I have a Golden.. I wonder if she would like that duty.

  12. Love your insight on retirement. We are still several years away from that, but it will certainly be a big change. I guess our next transition will be an empty nest in about 6 years. Regarding the guitar, I have a whole new respect for my hubby and son who play. I tried some ukulele lessons in Kauai and could only play two notes/chords! Harder than it looks!

  13. You are so right about hubs (at least mine) he says these things to me everyday...sometimes I ignore and hum to myself.

  14. Hi Katie I love hodgepodge!
Love James Taylor, most guitar music generally...peanut butter definitely.
It is hard to narrow down most loved movie scenes, they include the first time Max sees the garden of la Siroque in a Good Year, Nettie and Celie being reunited in the Color Purple, and Fred and Ginger dancing Cheek to Cheek. I have lot of dancing favourites from musicals :)
I hope you are having a great week my dear
    Sally xx

  15. Katie, I was giggling as I read about retirement. Two of my dearest friends are still adjusting to the retirement of their Misters and they have said the same exact things you shared. They laugh at me and say just you wait until your Mister retires. Have a lovely day...Maxine

  17. My husband retired seven, count 'em, seven years ago. It definitely is an adjustment. He wants to go with me on errands, and I just want private time. In the grocery store, he disappears. There's no browsing and he analyzes what I'm buying and do we need it. He thinks he can decorate now. Just wait. He's organized every cabinet, drawer, and closet in the house (which is actually a good thing). But he has all the time in the world for our 3-year-old twin grandaughters. That's the best thing.

    1. Aww... Susie that is so sweet. Your granddaughters are pretty lucky to have you and your hubby. Enjoy your weekend.

  18. Oh my goodness, I needed this laugh today. I have worked from home for my entire relationship with my husband, about 5 years ago he started too as well. Talk about an adjustment! I think that you will adjust too but it is a challenge.

As for grocery shopping, I love it but only if I can but lots of junk food and baking stuff!

  19. I told my husband he could never retire (LOL)! He takes off most of the month of December and it drives me c-r-a-z-y! This past year, however, he found something to do most every day (he finally got the hint)...him being home every day messes up my schedule!

Whenever he goes to the grocery store, he comes home with what I call "batchelor" food,i.e. chips, cheese, sliced luncheon meat, tea, crackers, and oh yeah, something sweet! I asked him how I'm supposed to make a meal out of that!

I love your favorite quote...its so true. I also say about our grown children and grandchildren....I love to see them come, but love to see them leave too!

My guilty pleasure came back on this week..."Southern Charm"! How crazy is T-Rav and Catherine? Right now I'm watching an old Housewives of New York marathon which I don't really follow but know enough to kinda know what's going on.

  20. I do have a retired hubby...and it is work. How does on person trash the kitchen making a sandwich! He makes the coffee...but my spoonful of sugar finds itself all over the black granite. I could go on! Ha! But won't. Look what you can look forward to. Sheila

  21. Absolutely LOVE your sense of humor....the retirement thing....get him a shed!!!
My husband is retired, has some hobbies, golfs, bowls, has a group of buddies, but the thing that he does absolutely every day is putter in his shed!! Our family jokingly refers to him as " at the office!" This is a man that thirty years ago would have never considered such a thing!
That being said, I keep pretty busy and social. I completely understand the frustration of the beginning years of "togetherness", as my mother used to say. I can still remember when she and my father retired at the same time...she was a sweet, loving wife...never said a word against him...her standard line was, " For all these years I've been (insert any chore or activity) and now he wants to tell me how to do it!!" Love that memory!!

  22. Love your Hodgepodge as usual!! I attempted to retire and it lasted 6 weeks until the Hubs put me back to work in his office! OY! The great thing is I have a LOT of flexibility. I think you can figure out what the difficult thing is (yes, working with the Hubs!). Loved that movie too!

  23. Your description of the Mister in retirement made me howl - pretty much my daily experience! Have a wonderful weekend, my dear! xoxo

He does ask too many questions........like LAST NIGHT!WHat did you DO ALL DAY?When my list was complete he rolls his eyes like that would TAKE 15 minutes........................
I had TWO of those CANADIAN GEESE flying over my car in front of me YESTERDAY!Very Low.............perhaps YOURS on HOLIDAY?WE had temps in the 80's yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!HOpe that didNOT ruin your DAY......XX

  27. LOL..your husband must be related to my husband. When he semi-retired and began working most days in his home office he would always ask me when I was going to be home. I finally told him he would know what time I would be home when he heard the front door open! I now cook 3 meals a day and am constantly trying to juggle my schedule with his...why I don't know! I love the days when he has a meeting and has to get up, put on a shirt and tie and head to his real office.....hallelujah! The cartoon says it all!

  28. Are all husbands alike? This sounds very familiar and mine is not yet retired! Katy you always brighten my day! I needed a good laugh today!

    ReplyDelete
  29. My husband and I work together in our own business, so it's like we're already retired together - but still working. Ack! I totally want someone to do all my grocery shopping for me, AND come home and put everything away!

  30. Apparently, R and I are never retiring, so moot. Loved the scene and will watch movie again. Vaguely remember being annoyed at Julia but never at Rupert!! And that song! Best version ever is by Aretha!!! Xo A
