An Oscar Worthy Hodgepodge

Hello, dear friends.  Happy day-after-Super Tuesday.  This seems like the longest election year in history.  And it's only the first of March.  I hope that you are having a good week.

1.  February ended with an extra 24 hours in 2016.  What did you do with your bonus day?

On Monday, it was almost 60 degrees here in Massachusetts.  I donned my favorite walking outfit and took an hour walk.  I don't mind telling you I received a lot of cat calls and beeps from men.  When you look good, you feel good.

I also used some of those hours playing ball with these two characters.

2.What's something in your life that's grown by leaps and bounds in recent days, weeks, months, or years?  I'm giving you lots of room to come up with an answer here, so no fair passing on this one.

This one is a no-brainer.

3.  Do you read reviews about a film before deciding if you'll see it?  Did you watch The Oscars this year, and if so your thoughts on the programs?  How many of the Best Picture nominees had you seen prior to the broadcast?  (Spotlight, The Martian, The Big Short, The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, Room, and Brooklyn).  If you watched The Oscars who gets your award for 'best dressed?'

Anyone who has read my blog for awhile knows that the Mister and I enjoy going to the movies.  I usually check out Rotten Tomatoes if we are trying to make the decision on which movie to see.

But if I have my heart set on a particular movie such as the sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which is coming out this month, I don't usually check out the reviews because I'm going to see it anyway.

As far as the Oscar nominees go, I saw every movie except Mad Max and The Revenant.

Chris Rock's monologue was funny at times, but I felt that he overdid the diversity thing.

I loved the fact that Chris Rock took advantage of the situation and raised a lot of dough for the Girl Scouts.

For me, it was a tie between Priyanka Chopra and Olivia Munn.

According to the Mister, Alicia Vikander took home the prize when it came to best dressed.

4.  When did you last have overnight guests?  Give your top three tips on being a houseguest.

The last houseguests that we entertained were our two girls.  I consider them "guests" because they never lived in our present home.

That, and the fact that they think they are guests and expect their poor little Mom to wait on them hand and foot.

*****

I don't know about other people, but these are the strongly suggested tips that I have for my houseguests.

Top 3 Tips for being a Houseguest
at the home of the
Preppy Empty Nesters

1. Bring the beautiful hostess a very expensive gift.  Don't forget to compliment her every 15 minutes.

2.  If you have little kids, leave them at home.

3.  While cleaning up after yourself, feel free to keep going and clean the rest of the house.

5.  March 2nd is Peanut Butter Lover's Day.  Will you be celebrating?  If so, would you prefer a homemade peanut butter cookie, a Reese's peanut butter cup, an old-fashioned peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or shall I just hand you a jar and a tablespoon?

I adore peanut butter.  Now, the only one that I inhale is a low cal version called Better n' Peanut Butter.  That way I can eat twice as muchPass the tablespoon, please.  And if you have any Nutella, pass it my way, too.

6.  Why is failure important?  Or isn't it?

This quote says it all.

7.  Share with us one fun thing on your March calendar.

This month, we are having my bff , Anne and her Mr. and my new bff, Annie and her Mister over for dinner this month.  I am so excited because Annie and Anne have never met.  I think they will love each other because they have so much in common.  Also, they won't have trouble remember each other's first name.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Do you ever have a recurrent dream?  At least once a month I dream that my wallet or purse are stolen.  This week's dream took place at an airport and centered around my purse and phone being taken.  Some very handsome good Samaritan lends me his phone but I can't call anyone because I don't know anyone's number by heart.  (This is true.)  So, I just give up and move in with the handsome stranger.

What's your top tip for a houseguest?

Until next time...

  1. My Big Fat Greek Wedding has a sequel? That is one of the funniest movies ever. My tip for house guests: Turn off the lights before you go to bed.;-)

  2. #2-ha! I did love Olivia Munn's dress too. Actually I thought there were more hits than misses this year. Enjoy your day!

  3. I thought Cate Blanchett was stunning.
BTW, I watched Brooklyn on Fios this weekend because of your review and thoroughly enjoyed it.

  4. You are so funny! I kept thinking of my waistline for #2 but didn't have the nerve to write it.

  5. Since college kids are my most recent and often guests these days, I'd say not to eat everything in the refrigerator is a good rule to follow.
Can't wait for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2! We still laugh about the Butt-Cake /Bundt Cake scene. It was much like my Mother in law saying, "Bowled peanuts?" to me when I was trying to tell her about BOILED peanuts!

  6. As usual, your post made me smile. I felt the same way about the Oscars. I'm glad he made a point about diversity, but I would have liked to hear some other kinds of jokes and stories. I saw Revenant...loved it, but it is very rough. I really want to see Room, Spotlight, and Brooklyn!

  7. Great HodgePodge as usual!! I loved Alicia V's dress too! Sadly, I haven't seen any of the nominated movies, but Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is also on my "must-see" list. My tip for houseguests is to take the hosts out to eat and pay for it! :)

  8. Your houseguest tips made me laugh...PREACH IT! :) Truly, your sense of humor is infectious! I read reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, too...from my experience, they're pretty spot on. Enjoy your day, Katie!

  10. Love the houseguests tips! After all who doesn't love a nice gift and someone else cleaning their house! You are spot on about the election...I am so over it! I have lots of peanut butter and chocolate recipes on my chocolate blog if you need a few treats to celebrate the day!

  11. You are so funny! It's barely 7:00 on the west coast and your picture of grandma Yetta made me laugh out loud:)
As for the peanut butter, it's a toss up for me between the Reese's cups and the jar with a spoon. I find myself constantly buying jars and I'm the only one in the house eating it...and it's not the lo-cal type.....
Also, I have had that same dream as you about my purse or it's contents being stolen for years now! I wake up in a panic every time!

  13. My favorite Oscar dress was Charlize Theron's red dress - but with that body and face, how could she go wrong.

Quite a few excellent movies out this past year, but I think that The Big Short and The Revenant were most memorable.

Did the Girls Scouts really raise $65,000+ at the Oscars? That would mean that 130 audience members purchased (donated) $500 worth of cookies. Did they have that much cash with them or carry their checkbooks??

Am I the only person who has never seen the original My Big Fat Greek Wedding??

My advice to house guests: be useful, be generous and make your stay a net gain for the hostess.

  14. You are hysterical and the picture in #2 is priceless! Chowdah is so neat and trim and Tater generally is but in the cold winter months they let his hair stay longer. I did not know that there were Mini-Doodles, talk about adorable. My advice to house guests, about 4 days is plenty long enough. :o)))

  15. As always, the dresses were better than the Oscars show. I have that fear of losing my phone in real life. I don't know anyone's number and I'd be up a creek. Your solution is perfect. You have to do what you have to do, right?

  16. My top tip is - don't stay too long. Which my houseguests clearly don't heed, since my mom has been here since July. But that's a long story. I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't seen a single Oscar nominated movie. I thought the show was a little blah this year, but I did like Chris Rock. I just watch for the dresses anyway! And I have to agree with your husband - I loved the yellow dress.

  17. Ha! Ha! That is one of the 'perks' of living full time in a 400 square foot fifth wheel....no room for 'house guests'!

  18. Lol - your posts are always so entertaining! I love peanut butter as well. Sometimes when I am PMS, I grab a handful of chocolate chips and a spoonful of peanut butter and I am SO happy. I also love the dark peanut butter cups made by Justin's. They are so smooth and creamy and because they are organic, I feel better about indulging in them now and then. The house tips for guests list is great and those doggies are as adorable as ever! Enjoy the rest of your week!

  20. Hello my dear Katie
Sorry I am so late to comment. I was very touched by your post to honour nurses, I admire and am grateful to them and your sweet daughter is in my thoughts.

Hodgepodge is fun, I love your choice of Oscar dresses. I didn't see the show in the end, but there were some lovely gowns, well deserved wins and Eddie Redmayne wore great shoes.
Your doggies are so adorable, I think I would overstay if I were your houseguest. I am very happy to do the walks :)
    love, Sally xx

  21. Ok - SO. I got a s far as the declaration that you are going to see Greek Wedding 2 (those of us who love it can shorten it up a bit) without consulting Rotten Tomatoes. OMG. I absolutely LOVED the first one. Saw it a zillion times. And then I got the DVD. Of course, you love it, too. Now this is getting scary.

  22. Ok. Done. I'm back. How do I not know about Better'N Peanut Butter. Is it a Trader Joe's American Kind Of Thing? Probably. Perhaps you could ship me some? And Nutella update - my nephew worked for them for four years. I can probably get my hands on some for you. Somehow. Ooooooh = up here we have Kinder Surprise which is a Nutella product. Not legal in the States. Hmmmmmmm.
