A Very Hot Hodgepodge

Hello dear friends.  The Northeast is experiencing the mother of heatwaves.  Today is supposed to be cooler than yesterday - a refreshing 91 degrees.  I'm not complaining though.  As the Mister says, you don't have to shovel heat.

1.  Last thing you did on the spur of the moment?

I am not a spur of the moment kind of girl.  However, a couple of weeks ago, my bff, Anne and her bff, Kathy were going for a night in Maine.  They were kind enough to ask me to join them.  Kathy needed to check out a venue for her daughter's wedding.

I'm so glad that I went because I got to see a lot of the beautiful state of Maine through Kathy's eyes, who was born and raised there.  We also had lots of laughs along the way.  I'll tell you all about it within the next couple of weeks.

2.  How well informed do you feel about the current Syrian refugee crisis?

To be honest with you, I am a lot more informed about Jennifer Aniston's wedding than I am about the Syrian refugee crisis.

3.  What have you changed your mind about?

The only thing that I can think of that I have changed my mind about recently is the Kindle.  I have always been a "book" person.  I love the smell and feel of a brand new book in my hands.

But now I can appreciate the Kindle for its convenience and for the fact that I can make the text as big as one found in a Dr. Suess book.

4.  A medium sized non-poisonous snake found its way into the pool trap this weekend.  If you'd been sitting poolside would you have fished it out?  Gone running?  Called for help?  Pretended not to know?  Continued swimming?

I would grab the dogs, put the house on the market, and run as quickly as my chubby little thighs would take me.

5.   September 10th is National TV Dinner Day... what's your idea of a great TV dinner?  (or at least a pretty good one!)

TV dinners remind me of  my sweet little grandma, Margaret.  Sista and I would spend every Saturday night at her house so that our parents could have a date night.  Grandma was a good baker but that's about it when it came to kitchen skills.  Sista and I considered it a treat to have a TV dinner and 7UP for supper.

Grandma lived to the ripe old age of 102, so there must have been something to those TV dinners.

6.  Samuel Johnson is quoted as saying, "Courage is reckoned the greatest of all virtues; unless a man has that virtue, he has no security for preserving any other."  Would you agree?  Where have you seen that played out recently?  What's the second greatest virtue?

I would agree that courage is the greatest of all virtues.  As far as the second greatest virtue, I will repeat a little saying that Grandma used to chant...

Patience is a virtue,
have it if you can.
Often in a woman,
but NEVER in a man!

Disclaimer:
I am not referring to any man in particular.
Much.

7.  What are three words you have trouble remembering how to spell?

hors d'oeuvres

and

 supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

And as far as the third word goes, I not only forget how to spell it, but the actual word slips my memory, as well.
Note to self:  increase dose of Ginkgo whatchamacallit.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Last night was Stephen Colbert's debut as the host of The Late Show.  It's airs past my bedtime so I didn't see it, but I am going to watch it today.  I have been a big fan of Stephen Colbert's since The Daily Show.  Did I mention that one of his first guests is going to be my ex-boyfriend George?

Until next time...

  1. Hey, we have the same ex-boyfriend : ) Oooh, a Maine wedding will be pretty I bet. I still like books, but use the Kindle when traveling or reading at night. I like the lighted feature. Have a great day!

  2. Ha! I am with you on making the text larger on Kindle; that's what sold me!!As far as TV dinners, we could not afford them at home; however on a sleepover when we had them, it was like a gourmet meal and a treat as a little girl!!
I guess we will all keep fighting over George even though he is married now, darn it!

  4. Love Maine!
I surely would continue swimming if I saw a snake in the pool.... because courage is the greatest virtue.
I watched Stephen Colbert's first show last night. The opening was great, but IMO the show quickly became kinda silly and boring. I watched religiously his old Comedy Central show, and I hope that his new show reaches that consistently memorable level of entertainment.

  5. We are also recipients of this heatwave, and I am so ready for it to be done. We actually do get the occasional large black snake in and around our pool in the summer. Retrieving and disposing of them is what husbands and teenage sons are for! I still prefer the snakes over the huge garden spiders we have to skim out of the filter daily. They like to hide in the rafts and pool toys too.

  7. We watched the first half of Steven Colbert's show and thought it was great. We'll watch the second half this evening at a more suitable hour for our elderly selves.

As for the heat wave, you know how it tickles me when my friends living in the beautiful north east get a taste of my everyday weather! Add a bucket of water over your head for the full humidity effect. Your hair always looks much too nice anyway.

  10. On the morning of our wedding, my then-fiancé called me outside saying "wait til you see this!". My thought, "awwee, it's our wedding day, must be a rainbow or flower or kitten...." Big ole snake on the woodpile. I turned to run and came face to face with the mouse it was eyeing for breakfast. After I finished screaming, I told my mother to sell the house while we were on our honeymoon.

PS - always Swanson's on Saturday nights with the babysitter!

  12. Spur of the moment trips are always the best. My husband and I often end up in the Florida Keys for lunch...just because. (It's only a two hour drive!). I am a horrible speller and thank goodness for spell check every day! My glam mother had a standing babysitter every Saturday night for my entire childhood. Come hell or high water, she was going out with my Dad every Saturday! That Swansons dinner is what we got to eat every Saturday night. They were pretty gross! xoxo www.Japolina.blogspot.com

  15. We DVR Jimmy Fallon so I am afraid to add another late night to my queue as now that school is back in session I feel lucky to stay awake past 7pm to watch the recorded show. I love Maine...Hubster's sister lives in Kittery...we don't get to visit as much as we'd like, can't wait to hear about your visit.

  16. Snakes...hey, I was a town girl until we build a house in the country. Out in the middle of lots of acres...When I saw a snake I ran. But once I backed my car back and forth over one. Then there were cayotes, and lastly a couple of black bears. I kid you not. They were released in TN a few years back.
I now live in the country, but in a subdivision. We do have deer, but they don't bother me. Have not seen a snake.
I enjoyed Colbert's Oreo skit. Saw our Kentucky boy George! Then went shut eye. He has a grandmother that lives/lived up the road...before we moved. His best movie...that still cracks me up, Brother Where Fort Art Thou? Watch it if you can. Too funny!

  18. I always have to look up that "hors..." word, too. It is also surprising how often I use it! I was really looking forward to Stephen Colbert and I thought it was semi-terrible. He seemed really jacked-up on something, though I am sure it was just nerves. Also, I thought the interviews were awful. He barely let George Clooney or Jeb Bush answer his questions before he made a funny remark. I just wanted to yell, "calm down!", through the TV. I did really enjoy the Jon Stewart cameo at the beginning though - very clever!

  19. Oh how I love Stephen Colbert. And the extra large type on my Kindle! Thanks to your recommendation, I have expanded my news gathering sources beyond People to include Skimm...at least when I remember to read their daily report. We are enjoying delightful, almost chilly, temps here so I will do my best to send them your way for the weekend!
