A Couple of Movie Reviews

Last weekend, the girls and I allowed the Mister to make the movie choice because it was his birthday.  The poor guy is always outvoted by his 3 women when it comes to movie selection.  But not on his big weekend!
I had a feeling he was going to pick this one.  And he didn't disappoint.

Halfway through the movie, I whispered to the girls that I thought the plot seemed oddly familiar.  They whispered back that we had seen a movie with a similar storyline a few months ago.  I asked them if they remembered the name.  The Mister leaned over and told us to "SHUSH!"  I guess he wanted to hear every single gunshot and ear-piercing explosive that was on the screen.
Anyway, the movie that we were referring to is this one.  My review of the last movie is here.

Now that we have that straightened out, White House Down was OK, and about an hour too long.  Channing Tatum spent most of his screen time getting shot at in this dirty, tight undershirt while trying to save the President, his own daughter, and the rest of the free world.

James Woods played the Director of Security who also happened to plan the whole takeover by a bunch of crazies.  By the way, I am not spoiling this for you.  It comes out in the first few minutes of the film.
Side note:  James has not aged well.  I told the girls he was kind of handsome when he was younger.  They answered "EWWWW!!" I had to agree.

Jamie Foxx playing the President of the United States??  Uh uh - not buying it.  It may have to do with flashbacks of this...

All in all, the girls and I would give this movie a C.  The Mister, on the other hand, loved every minute of the gunshots, machine guns, knife wielding, military helicopters, and explosives in this film.
The girls and I walked out sharing secret smiles of relief because we knew that it would be another 365 days before it was the Mister's turn to pick a movie again!

*****

Three guesses who picked this one out...

I just adored Bridesmaids.  Whenever  I am flicking through the stations on the tube and Bridesmaids is on, I will tune in at any part of the movie to watch it.  And every time I will laugh as hard as I did the first time I saw it in the theater.

The Heat was very, very funny.  I started to laugh the moment Melissa McCarthy appeared on screen and never stopped until it was over.  As a matter of a fact, I did not dash to the ladies room as I usually do after a two hour movie.  I stuck around and hoped there would be outtakes.  To my dismay, there were none.

It's a lot easier to play the "funny one" than the "straight one."  Sandra Bullock did a great job and nailed it, though.

No question, though, Melissa McCarthy absolutely stole this movie.  She managed to make her character believable and almost lovable -  not a mere caricature of the "overweight funny girl."

The girls and I gave this one an A.
I have a hunch after watching the chemistry between these two  there will be a Heat II.
Or then again, I may be just wishing...

TGIF!!!

  1. That about sums up our household! LOL I usually have the girls preview the movie, then decide if it is worth splurging on or waiting for the dvd to come out. However, I do want to see The Heat and Katie is previewing Grown Ups 2 for us tomorrow!!

  3. GREAT reviews! James Wood does NOT look anything like he did when he was younger. At least he hasn't had so much plastic surgery that he looks like a farce-and nothing like his old self. He has just aged badly, like you said. Second movie sounds delightful! xo Diana

  4. So funny Katie:) Sounds like your hubs is feeling all the estrogen in the house? We just saw Now You See it.. it was good. We talked about the movie you saw and decided we'd rent it when it came out. As far as The Heat goes.. I can't wait to see it. Totally loved Brides Maids and I always enjoy S. Bullock. xxL

  6. Thanks for the review......funny as always. Saw The Heat which i personally thought was OK, for me it would be a C~ (sorry)! I was surprised at the amount of swearing but admittedly they are both hysterical women. I have always been a big fan of Sandra Bullock, she is so naturally funny that I know she just has to be this way in real life.My husband and yours definitely have the same taste in movies..whats with that! Enjoy your weekend!
